Are Ghosts Real?

So there are all these paranormal movies and shows and what not... quite a big commotion. I don't think they're anything, but it does beg the question....

Are "ghosts" real according to the Bible?

and if so, What are they?

and isn't exorcism considered witchcraft?

It all seems pretty phony-baloney to me, but a lot of religious people seem to dabble in these beliefs and I know Christ cast out a lot of demons so, is there any Biblical support for ghosts or exorcisms?

Ghosts

By ghosts I assume we are talking about spirits of the deceased?

The only instance I recall in scripture invovling interaction with the spirit of a deceased person ( besides the parable in Luke 16) is when Saul called up Samuel. 1Samuel 28:15.

".....Now Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"

Saul consulted a medium which was forbidden. Leviticus 20:6

Aside from this, the "spirits" I see in scripture who interact with people are either angels or devils. Jesus cast out devils and instructed the disciples to do so. Matthew 10:8

I have no idea if exorcisms are truly casting out devils.

Isa 8:19 When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Some believe it is OK to pray for the dead, or even to the dead, some even believe it is OK to pray to "Saints" that are deceased. The Bible says there is only ONE mediator between God and man. (1Tim 2:5)

Rev 22:15 Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

Exorcism is just another name for casting out demons, Hollywood and certain churches have made a big production and ritual out of it. But Jesus and the apostles just told them to leave and they did.

Luk 4:33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
Luk 4:34 "Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!"
Luk 4:35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!"

The demons know Jesus can destroy them easily.

There are certain requirements for this, not just anyone can do it.

Act 19:14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.
Act 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"
Act 19:16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

As for mental illness, I don't think it's all or none, surely there are chemical imbalances, physiological things, and even good old fashioned "baggage" of past sins. But sometimes I think it can be demon related as well.

No such things and Human Ghost, that is stuff out of Hollywood, and folk tails... and the confused. All parnormal activity is directly related to familiar (with past people, family's and so on) spirits... It's demonic, it does exist, and not something to be to concerned with as a believer.

It is appointed for men to die once, then judgement, Not to die then run around as a Ghost......

There are certain requirements for this, not just anyone can do it.

Holy Spirit "Filled" Believers are equipped to Deal with Evil spirits. There are other threads that debate what exactly "Holy Spirit filled" means. go there!!!
Greater is He that is in us, then He that is in the World... If you operate in any of the gifts... you qualify...

Faith is also a important issue..... doubt, and your out!! just like the disciples... Please Note... this goes out but by prayer and faster was added somewhere by someone and not in the original text.. study it yourself, don't take my word for it... Faith!!

We saw what happened to the men of secva, No Holy Spirit, No faith, and not born again....... Spirits will recognize you, or more accurate, the one inside of you...

Casting out devils..........

When we see this in operation in the bible, we always see some sort of condition where the person with the devil was unable to think clearly to receive on their own. The women that followed Paul, the crazy man in the garden with chains... the lunatic boy and so on.

Paul allowed this women to follow him for several days, which indicates to me he allowed that until permission or a auction of the Holy Spirit said it was time to get rid of her devil... It may be that she needed to hear Paul preach to receive the faith to be delivered, or that The Holy Spirit felt it was not the right time.. For whatever reason, Paul had to wait...

Jesus healed all that were sick and oppressed of the devil.......

Is sickness satanic?? You better believe it, but no indication that we have to address the demonic spirit when laying hands on the sick... Also, sickness though part of the curse, may also be caused because by other things than a direct manipulation of a demonic spirit.

Mental Illness:

The psychology folks have discussed many times where they believe that something else besides the brain is the cause of all mental illness. There are numerous papers and conventions that have discussed this possibility. Simply put, there are some things that can't be explained by just the functions and limits of the brain..

Someone with a damaged brain would be unable to respond to the stimulus of the world properly and thus be hindered from correct perception of surroundings.

Someone that constantly mediates on the wrong things, fearful things is the one subject to demonic oppression if not complete possession.. Most mental illness is caused by allowing the wrong things in, and entertaining them.... You can guess where the thoughts come from....

In all my years of teaching faith, I have only come across one person the Lord asked me to cast a devil out of... It was at a homeless shelter and the man was crazy.. most would just avoid him... He would just constantly scream most days then mumble by himself..

When I bound the spirit in the name of Jesus (not cast out) he just blinked at me and started to cry.. His first words where.. "The monster is gone!!! the monster is Gone!!"

I then took him into a back room where another man was and that man just started to yell at me.... "You can't cast me out!! you can't cast me out!!!" that man just ran away out of the building...

It was a strange day............ but talking to the delivered man, I found out he did go to church before he started dating a women that was in to witchcraft.... He said that is when the thoughts started to come, and he started to have problems.... go figure....

I have also been made sick... by a devil and one did cut my nose... but those are other testimonies...

Devils are real.... There are no Ghost, and a child of God has no need to be afraid of any of it......... because you know...

Regarding your question...are ghosts real? No, as stated above by Brother Mike...they are usually the manifestation of familiar spirits associated with the one that has passed on. Basically, demonic spirits mimicking or deceiving you into believing that it is the real person's spirit, so they can play off your feelings or familiarity with that certain individual, which can open a door to the enemy into engaging with talking with the dead. This is an abomination to the Lord. We should always seek the Holy Spirit in understanding things, including in discernment of whether it is of Him or not. Most people that fall into this trap is because they have not cut off soul ties to that individual and that is how the enemy can use this as a way of working. There are good and bad soul ties, one's for the Lord's use and one's used by the enemy through ungodly relations. A book that may be helpful to you in understanding this is "Breaking Unhealthy Soul Ties," by Bill Banks which discusses this and how it works, along with Biblical understanding with it.

Regarding exorcism...unfortunately, Hollywood has caused much confusion about this (as with many things), and even some that are Christians because of lack of understanding (Hos. 4:6 - spiritual understanding). In reality, it's called deliverance, and yes, it does involve casting out demons. As indicated above by many, there are Scriptures regarding this throughout the Bible. Jesus did it and we as Christians are to be able to also, by His authority - led by His Spirit. One thing that is misunderstood about deliverance is that some people believe it's all to do with demon possession and it's not for Christians. However, that's not true. A true Christian cannot be demon possessed, but they can have demonic spirits that influence their thoughts and actions. This is the result of being born into sin...we are all born sinners (in addition to generational related), and also the result of opening doors to the enemy because of their own sinful actions. If this is the case, then it is our responsibility to workout our full salvation (deliverance as being a part of it), with the Holy Spirit guiding us through it (Phillip. 2:12). When we are born sinners and accept Christ into our hearts, there is more cleansing, healing (which is deliverance), which needs to be processed through with the Lord. It is a walk. It does not happen overnight. These are characteristics of our nature that have been influenced by our old nature (or carnal nature in the past, lusts of the flesh, disobedience to the leading of God, etc.). We have to remove what influenced us before out of us...so that more of Him can come in and make His home in us. This is why the Lord searches our hearts and examines our minds (Jer. 17:10; Luke 16:15; Ps. 139:1), but we have the responsibility to do it with Him...examine ourselves (2 Cor. 13:5). This is not something to shy away from. He allows this deliverance process to occur with Him, so that we are not led into temptation (Matt. 6:13) in the future. We will always be tempted, but when we are 'cleaned up' by and through His Spirit's leading in deliverance, there's a greater chance we will not fall into that temptation because our discernment is clear. Not going through any form of deliverance can cause us not to hear clearly when the Spirit is leading us...therefore leading us astray. Jesus gave us this power to overcome, but we need to learn how to do it with Him. I have found by going through deliverance myself, it makes you more attuned in spiritual warfare with Him, and better able to pinpoint specific things to pray about because it's clearer to you. Now, regarding possession...that occurs only to those that are not believers. A great book that discusses deliverance in depth and explains how this all works is, "Pigs in the Parlor," by Frank Hammond or you can also take a look at, "They Shall Expel Demons," by Derek Prince. Do not allow others to deter you from understanding this. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into understanding this more.

It is very important to allow the Holy Spirit to show you accordingly, as you go along through this because He will tell you how and when to do it. As this is where the authority comes from...Him. If you get ahead of His leading in this process, you may not be fully equipped or prepared for the battle...as there's a time for everything in Him. When He gives you the authority then you have it for whatever He's having you battle against. If He hasn't told you, don't engage. This is a mistake many make because they assume they have all the authority right away, and jump ahead of God (therefore working in the fleshly nature, in vain and not in His power; putting themselves in danger).

It sounds like the Lord is taking you into a healing process and this is why these questions have arised. Just because you don't understand it fully, doesn't mean it doesn't exist...allow Him to take you through it. We must be consecrated and made holy as He is holy (1Pet. 1:15-16). He does this by His instructions through Himself, by His Spirit. The darkness must be removed (1 John 1:5-7). He purifies us. There is no darkness in Him, and as we grow more in Him...we too remove our darkness from before. Spirits?

If you frequent dark degenerate areas where prostitution, drugs and crime thrive such as red light districts. You will meet some very dark characters.

In my early years as a Christian my friends grew up in one of these areas. So I have seen some people that there is no doubt were demon possessed. Most non Christians are influenced by the demonic realm, but there are some who are inhabitated by these spirits.

Not weird at all. If we had the ability to see in the realm of the spirit we would see hundreds of demons running around, whispering in people's ears, and going back and forth from person to person. The spirit World is extremely alive, and things happen there first, before they occur here..

While it's extremely hard to prove if the video has really captured demonic activity, It is possible that it did... Demonic spirits operate in the atmosphere of Fear... False pretense and deception. I have experienced similar things in real life, but I can assure you, it's common and nothing to get excited about..

Most non Christians are influenced by the demonic realm, but there are some who are inhabitated by these spirits.

All people are subject to demonic activity... even thoughts.... Check Peter wanting to protect the Lord, chopping off malchus ear... Jesus rebuked Satan which was behind what seemed to be a human response...

I have seen a few possessions.... That is where the person is not in control really but has yielded completely to the spirit. A lot of times this comes and go's, as we see in Saul's case... Some are commited to a mental institute... Humans do not have the mental equipment to stay sane, while clocked in death and fear....

Most come as a blinding to the truth, and heavy oppression....Something Christians can fall into if we entertain negative thoughts.. and not cast them down, thinking on these things.. Whatsoever be of good report...

Even so, as I have told many... if you see paranormal activity.... the worse thing to do is to become afraid... I can't stress this enough... This is Satan's connecter... FEAR... Responding in fear will not help, trust me... and normally Christians rebuke over and over in the name of Jesus hoping the thing will stop and go away... They do it out of fear... Fear of not wanting that physical presence.. This is not faith...

If something grabs your covers at night (common) or calls your name in the dark... just calmly tell it to put your covers back... and stop calling your name in the name of Jesus... that's it... don't bother with it no more... and don't be the least bit concerned...

The level of believe various in how far one wants to go in it.Before Jesus Christ saved me,I served the enemy,when I say this,I do not mean,doing worldly things alone,I mean I served him.

I raised demons on many I worked for 2 years in a cult called the coven, started by a man named Anton le- vey a former animal trainer,who came, and in 1966 stated satan worship,true worship!! I did this because I was stupid!! And I wanted power over my enemys.

Exorcism started by the Catholic Church,is mans way to deal with demons, with God's help. The problem in many cases with this,is that they do not understand only Jesus himself can do this,and when many toy with the enemy bad things can sure happen to them!( acts 19:13-16!! jewish exorcists!)

We as believers have nothing to fear,but knowing the Word, is far better then not knowing it!!( luke 10:19 for example is such a promise.I strongly suggest you do not watch things,or go to a movie to become fearful,for the enemy uses all sorts of devilish tools to bring believers into bondage!

Thanks Brighthouse... this is very informative. I do believe in both the supernatural things above and below, but now I have a greater understanding and reality of those below. All this stuff is pretty weird to me so I've always just stayed away from it... and now, I'm still just gonna stay away from it. I'll just let God handle those things, ha.

Some believe it is OK to pray for the dead, or even to the dead, some even believe it is OK to pray to "Saints" that are deceased. The Bible says there is only ONE mediator between God and man. (1Tim 2:5)

Casting out devils..........

When we see this in operation in the bible, we always see some sort of condition where the person with the devil was unable to think clearly to receive on their own. The women that followed Paul, the crazy man in the garden with chains... the lunatic boy and so on.

Paul allowed this women to follow him for several days, which indicates to me he allowed that until permission or a auction of the Holy Spirit said it was time to get rid of her devil... It may be that she needed to hear Paul preach to receive the faith to be delivered, or that The Holy Spirit felt it was not the right time.. For whatever reason, Paul had to wait...

Jesus healed all that were sick and oppressed of the devil.......

Is sickness satanic?? You better believe it, but no indication that we have to address the demonic spirit when laying hands on the sick... Also, sickness though part of the curse, may also be caused because by other things than a direct manipulation of a demonic spirit.

Mental Illness:

The psychology folks have discussed many times where they believe that something else besides the brain is the cause of all mental illness. There are numerous papers and conventions that have discussed this possibility. Simply put, there are some things that can't be explained by just the functions and limits of the brain..

Someone with a damaged brain would be unable to respond to the stimulus of the world properly and thus be hindered from correct perception of surroundings.

Someone that constantly mediates on the wrong things, fearful things is the one subject to demonic oppression if not complete possession.. Most mental illness is caused by allowing the wrong things in, and entertaining them.... You can guess where the thoughts come from....

In all my years of teaching faith, I have only come across one person the Lord asked me to cast a devil out of... It was at a homeless shelter and the man was crazy.. most would just avoid him... He would just constantly scream most days then mumble by himself..

When I bound the spirit in the name of Jesus (not cast out) he just blinked at me and started to cry.. His first words where.. "The monster is gone!!! the monster is Gone!!"

I then took him into a back room where another man was and that man just started to yell at me.... "You can't cast me out!! you can't cast me out!!!" that man just ran away out of the building...

It was a strange day............ but talking to the delivered man, I found out he did go to church before he started dating a women that was in to witchcraft.... He said that is when the thoughts started to come, and he started to have problems.... go figure....

I have also been made sick... by a devil and one did cut my nose... but those are other testimonies...

Devils are real.... There are no Ghost, and a child of God has no need to be afraid of any of it......... because you know...

None of this is supported by scripture, and its not even about ghosts/wandering spirits/random energy. You have provided no biblical proof about ghosts or wandering spirits.

If you frequent dark degenerate areas where prostitution, drugs and crime thrive such as red light districts. You will meet some very dark characters.

In my early years as a Christian my friends grew up in one of these areas. So I have seen some people that there is no doubt were demon possessed. Most non Christians are influenced by the demonic realm, but there are some who are inhabitated by these spirits.

The level of believe various in how far one wants to go in it.Before Jesus Christ saved me,I served the enemy,when I say this,I do not mean,doing worldly things alone,I mean I served him.

I raised demons on many I worked for 2 years in a cult called the coven, started by a man named Anton le- vey a former animal trainer,who came, and in 1966 stated satan worship,true worship!! I did this because I was stupid!! And I wanted power over my enemys.

Exorcism started by the Catholic Church,is mans way to deal with demons, with God's help. The problem in many cases with this,is that they do not understand only Jesus himself can do this,and when many toy with the enemy bad things can sure happen to them!( acts 19:13-16!! jewish exorcists!)

We as believers have nothing to fear,but knowing the Word, is far better then not knowing it!!( luke 10:19 for example is such a promise.I strongly suggest you do not watch things,or go to a movie to become fearful,for the enemy uses all sorts of devilish tools to bring believers into bondage!

This is his world you know,do you think he would teach the world anything but fear?( 2 Cor 4:4) I was delivered myself from 2 very bad spirits,for a true believer in darkness will have to be possessed to accomplish his works,just as we have to have Holy Spirit in us to preform that which Jesus himself gave us authority to do in his MIGHTY Name!!( john 14:11-14!!)

I have seen many spirits come out,and from homes as well. That which we see daily is temporary,that which is unseen is eternal!!( 2 Cor 4:18!) I say this to you,please, do not fool with the enemy or the tools he uses,he does not play.( eph 4:27) and by doing this,you are opening the door to a jail cell,you will not get out of very easy!!

Its not evil, its just best to not know. For all you know there are ghosts out there. For all you know there is life on other planets. For all you know so many things could be true, false, or really something else. It is dangerous and ignorant to brand something you know nothing at all about.

Only God knows if ghosts are real, and only He can explain it. Wondering and believing something like ghosts isn't important. Thanks for your reply, however, I find your opinions to be a bit debasing. Each of those quotes and scriptures you eagerly dismissed actually answered all of my questions, and now, through the Lord's guidance, I have a much better understanding of ghosts, demons, and the spiritual realm.

While it is true that there is much the bible fails to specifically mention, the lack of "information" does not give us pass to turn a blind eye to the ways of this world. Yes, the secret things belong to the Lord, but He also blessed us with a mind and a brain to use to gain information; and that, my friend, was the purpose of this thread-- to gain information. A purpose which has successfully been accomplished.

We won't know all the mysteries of this world, but we can try to find out. Ignorance is dangerous, and so we must not simply ignore those things we don't understand or those things not mentioned specifically in the Bible. We must instead go forth equipped with Biblical knowledge and the Holy Spirit and test things, try things, ask things, and learn things. Wondering and asking these questions is important because it will better equip us and individuals, and as a church, to go out and argue our case for the Lord amid the philosophy and beliefs of this earth.

If you fail to take away any understanding or comprehension from the answers on this thread, that is unfortunate, but you ought to withhold from "branding something you know nothing at all about" as being simply "unexplained". For it is with our understanding of the Bible and our knowledge of God that we can go out and attempt to learn about anything and everything, and through personal experience, imagination, and thinking we can gain explanation and understanding of those things around us. Faith was given to us by God, and science was given to us by God... it is through the combination of the two, with the light of Christ, that we will gain the greatest understanding.
