I appreciate this is a sensitive topic and I'm not defending those who make and impose badly written laws and practices. Canada passed this type of Law several years ago. My only thought was, "Well, I guess prophecy is being fulfilled on this one as well. Because people are people are people, it's only a matter of time before they experience divorces just like the heterosexual and common-law couples." I only had to wait a year as one of the couples finalized their divorce on what what have been their first wedding anniversary. At the end of the day, being married is as much about marital benefits as it is about proclaimed love.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is there not a separation of Church and State in the United States? In effect, the Government runs the country, not the Church. The only time the Church will have any influence is when the majority of your law makers attend a church and subscribe to its general teachings from the Good Book. If the majority of law makers do not subscribe to those teachings and decide to subscribe to the wishes of the people who also do not, that is what the Government will do. What's that word? Democracy. Freedom of choice is another buzz word.
The best that Christians can do is give advice on how they feel topics should be handled in the same manner that all citizens have the right to do. Quoting Scripture regarding sin is meaningless to your Government as it is not a theocracy. By all means, express your opinion on what you feel is the best course of action. Sin is a very broad brush to define any act we do which disrespects Scriptural, Civil, and Moral Law to get our own way. Even just wishing you could do something which is wrong can land you in trouble spiritually. Base your actions on Scripture, but do not base the actions of others on Scripture who do not subscribe to it. They need to be taught, not condemned. If they know better, they are condemned already. All you can do is pray for it to change and remain a good role model throughout.
I concur with the OP that voting is important and not the debate about it. Cast your lot. If God wills the USA to retain laws which favours heterosexual marriage, so be it. If God allows Gay marriage to prevail, then so be it as well.
