Global Warming and Revelation 11:18

It's probably only in the last 6 years or so that I've really become aware of Global Warming, and over that time I've also become increasingly convinced that this could be the issue that brings the whole sorry mess of human existence to an end.

Our greed and selfishness are hurtling us towards the abyss and no one seems to be bothered, I heard yesterday that CO2 emissions are 6% up on the previous year , an increase of over 500 million tons, far worse than even the worst case scenario of the IPCC forecast in 2007.

I'm not sure how this relates to Revelation but i can see some indications of what may be in Matthew 24:7, War, pestilence and famine, "the beginings of Sorrows". Climate Change will undoubtedly bring about war as pressure on natural resources increases, pestilence as tempreratures rise, Malaria is already spreading to parts of Africa where it was never seen, and famine as droughts and desertification take hold.

What should be more imporatnt to us as Christians is perhaps not the end of this World, for we all believe that will happen at sometime, but that our very way of life in the Rich World will bring about the destruction of God's creation, and just how God will judge us for doing this.

There is much misrepresentation of the causes by both sides of the "global warming" debate. The pro insist we are the driving force while the con suggests we have no influence. I believe the truth is somewhere in between.

Earth has been far hotter before and as long as it remains will go through warming/cooling cycles. We are certainly adding to the greenhouse effect but even without our input temps will rise due to the eccentricities of our orbit as per the Milancovitch cycles and several other natural cyclic phenomena eg. tectonic caused weathering of exposed silicates, volcanic activity etc.

We should definitely care for God's Earth, and make every effort to be good stewards, but we are only part of the warming process. Aside from the pollutant effect of burning stuff and the emission of CO2, I see renewable energy options as brilliant and inspired. Power from the sun/wind/sea/geotherm etc is available and plentiful. We just don't know how to utilise it efficiently yet and burning stuff is heaps easier.

More inspiration from above may put us on a better course in energy suppliy or maybe God has other plans.

Hi Agua

I'm afraid within the Scientific Community there is now little "debate" as to the causes of Global Warming, the only debate is the consequences of it, and these seem to be getting more dire every time they're assessed.

While it's true that Earth has indeed been much hotter, there weren't 7 billion humans on it at that time, and of course there are cyclical patterns of warming and cooling, but none except a very few eccentrics doubt that the warming we are undoubtedly experiencing at the moment is due to human activity, fuelled by greed, selfishness and injustice.

But if we wanted to we could address the problem with the resources and technology we possess. As you say there are plentiful supplies of Renewable Energy, there just isn't the will to harness it. The Big Oil and gas companies and their political backers have too much invested to see it all come to nothing. Where would their vast profits come from if we all had solar panels and wind turbines.

No as usual , money, greed and selfishness rule and the gross injustice of climate change is apparant for all to see with the poorest countries who have done little to create this problem suffering the most from it's effects.

All of us in the rich world are responsible for this, it is inherent in our daily lives and i believe we will all have to answer to God for the destruction of his Earth if we continue on this path of burning Fossil Fuels.

G'day Rad,

There is much debate about the driving force of temperature change atm. Geologists and paleoclimatologists have discovered inconsistencies with the CO2 concentration/temperature increase model which they have not been able to explain. They are in the minority of course. While this doesn't negate the popular model of pro anthropological driven climate change it does show how we are not correct in all of the conclusions.

It's both environmentally and economically wise to head in the direction of renewable/clean energy sources. Unfortunately our current economy relies heavily on petroleum, coal, and gas use and it will take some time to balance their consumption without bringing our economy to its knees.

Most people are willing to protest with their voice but not with their wallet.

Oh Rad could you clarify something for me.

Hi Agua

All of us in the rich world are responsible for this, it is inherent in our daily lives and i believe we will all have to answer to God for the destruction of his Earth if we continue on this path of burning Fossil Fuels.

By destruction do you mean damage ?

hello all.

I don't think the debate is about whether our planet is warming.

This Global warming is a simple meteorological fact, just check
the stats for the last 30 years.

The issue is in fact the rapid acceleration of temperature over
an extremely short period of time. This is what worries the
climatologists.

Currently the debate is about the human contribution to this
Global warming.

It is not just the atmosphere that is affected it is also the
oceans which are also warming.

Yesterday's news was about how America spends more
money every year for storm damage. These figures have
been increasing for the last 12 years steadily.

Over here in Oz we have just passed a green tax through
Parliament, so we have solved the Global warming problem
for you guys.

God's Opinion on the effects of Climate Change.....

Ge 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

And Agua, very sensible posts; always knew that there was the odd Aussie who could talk a little sense.
