Prayer is truly a wonderful thing, to be able to tell God about someone's misfortune and instead of feeling completely helpless, you can intervene directly and powerfully by asking God and pleading their case with love and faith.
But can prayer be a substitute for dipping your hands in your pockets. That's an insult of God's blessings, a prime example of the third man in the parable of the talents. James had an interesting take on this-
Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? James 2:15-16 NIV
There's been a few requests in Prayer Requests that might find a more practical response more appropriate but beware of scammers.
