Macca i dont know where to start with your last reply about tongues. I was in a charasmatic church for about 2.5 years and i heard and tried it myself. Did not do anything to me and what i seen it do to the rest of the people that cont doing it was the same.

Macca why is it that Paul say he would rather speak 5 words that someome can undrstand than 1,000 words that no one can understand? Tongues=language real language not gibberish. But back to the subject the Holy Spirit directs us to Christ.

bgsda, you misquote scripture to suit your argument.
1 Cor 14: 18*I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you. 19*But in a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words to help others than ten thousand words in an unknown language.
New Living Translation. "
Doesn't mean Paul has no use of prayer in tongues. V 15 says He prays and sings in both the spirit and in his own tongue, but it seems you overlook this.
If you received no benefit from prayer in a tongue, it is not Holy Spirit that was at fault; He is the one who gives the words.

Tongue m eans language thats it. So ur holier than me because u speak gibberish. I speak in a diff tongue, i speak spanish.

1 Corinthians 14:5
Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would
prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues,
unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.

a personal attack does not make your opinion any better.
And you avoided dealing with the issue I raised.

Macca your right and I apologize, i was wrong. Please forgive me. God has showed me my wrongs. That im not this holy guy. Im a sinner my brother. I would ask all people here in talkjesus to forgive me for coming out like this "holy guy". God is great and Jesus when He comes into ones heart, comes in tjru thefront door of your heart. Not the back or side or thru a window. Then He may sit with you and dine or sup as it says in Rev. 3:20. Later He may ask to go thru the other rooms of your abode.

Well where im getting at is that I want everyone to know the truths that Gid has blessed me with, I love all you brothers and sisters in Christ. I want us all to see each other, if not here on earth then in the streets of gold. I just pray that if we dont understand each other, or contradict each other that it means simply that one of us is wrong. We ought to pray, including myself, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Thank you God bless you all.

For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
1 Cor 14:2 (NLT)

While some call it gibberish or babble, Paul is clearly speaking of a tongue or language that is not known to man. Although Paul says prophecy is better when we are gathered, speaking in tongues is still fruitful and beneficial.

But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
1 Cor 14:3-4 (NLT)

I speak in tongues privately to God several times a day and find it builds me up, empowers me and strengthens my relationship with Father.

One morning in Church and we all were praying I spoke in a language i never knew. I spoke this outloud in our church for all to hear, all do in our church believe in the gifts, and i knew when I spoke these words i sure did not understand,an interpation was needed! For in the church, all are to be edified as you all know! A young man after I was finished, broke free from one the chuch pews, got down on his knees in front of everyone and started to cry! A couple of the older brothers and sister went to him, to find out why? He looked up with tears in his eyes and said, the Lord is here,he spoke directly to me through that person, who i know does not speak Ukaine!

He even spoke my name! He said God loves Eric, and to be confirmed that the great I am is alive and well among those who believe,as well as among those who do not believe! For me to repent, and come back to the fold of love. That is what I am doing right now brothers and sisters!! The gibberish many believe is being spoken,is far from that brothers and sisters,as Jiggyfly so well put it from 1 cor 14:2!! I had no idea what I was saying, only that I was very much led by Holy Spirit to speak these words out loud in our Church.A most rare occurance!

I pray in the Spirit, and I pray with my mind also.(1 COR 14:15-20) I remember being on the highway one day, very hot about 92, and I had a flat tire,i was many miles from any service station, and needed a ride,I stuck my thumb out for a while, but no one stopped. The Lord inside me told me to pray in the Spirit rather then looking from self. So I did, praying in an unknown language as i was walking. I was thanking the Lord in English as well for honering my speech which I did not understand to him. 5 min later as I was walking,a person stopped right next to me on the service area of the freeway, and said, the Lord told me to stop for you, do you need a ride brother?? LOL When we speak to Jesus in his language, he speaks back in ours many times!! LOL Please do not look at God's words as meaningless!! They are very meaningful!! I know!! Hope this helps you!! blessing all!

Jiggy, you and Brighthouse are offering valuable points about tongues and I don't wish to offend you; however, the discussion has drifted away from the OP's question (How Can I Be Filled With The Holy Spirit?), so I'm closing the thread. Feel free to start another thread on the value of tongues.

Sorry SpiritledEd The act of being filled with Holy Spirit is the same as salvation, ask, and you shall receive, seek and ye shall find knock and the door shall be opened unto you.Matt 7:7 For in Salvation Holy Spirit abides in us. And seals us in him forever!! amen! eph 1:11-14, rom 8:16-17,1 john 3:24,1 john 4:13, 1 john 1:7 For the Glory of God is in the very face of our Jesus!! 2 cor 4:6
