Hello, as the title suggests, is playing video games with witchcraft or other ungodly things the bible clearly states not to do considered sin?

A friend and I are really curious on this topic, as we both play video games, and would like to know by God's Word what is said on this. I believe if God's Word says to stay away from witchcraft and not to do it, that a game giving you that choice to use it is sin because you chose to do it. My friend beleives it is just data and that they are not really using magic or witchcraft, but I don't really think that is so.

For example the ouija board is considered just a game, but it causes you to sin as it has you communicate to evil spirits for answers by witchcraft.

Deuteronomy 18:9-14 "

9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. 14For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do."

Very curious what you guys believe what the bible says about this. And if anyone knows any more scriptures that hit this topic. Thankyou.

Whatever is not of faith is sin so it would be sin for you but not for your friend.

What is the difference between witchcraft and prayer?
Prayer seeks God's will and witchcraft seeks the petitioners will.
They both use faith but for different reasons.

Video games do not contain that "self seeking" element that witchcraft does.It is ONLY a game and enforcing your will in the game is the purpose of the game so it is not even close to denying God or his will in your life.

1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
But it may not be edifying for you to play if it bothers you to be reminded that there is such a thing as people who believe in and practice witchcraft.

I sometimes call prayer craftsmanship because we are to make Jesus's enemies his footstool. We are not called to fear that which is not real but to enforce that which is truth.

This is the best answer the bible gives about these types of questions:

the ouija board is purposefully used to contact devils, don't even need this as we are in contact with devils everyday, but considering it's use, its no question that it's an abomination because of purpose. Stay far away!!!!

We need to be careful about others unlearned opinions. Their list of evil's, can completely miss something in our life we need to stay far away from. Be Holy Spirit led, not religious led.

I myself missed a big one.. I use to watch Forensic Science, where the person gets killed, or goes missing and they use science to solve the mystery.

No evil in that, there are Christian forensic scientist. After a year though, I started to have fear every time my wife did not come home on time, or one of my kids.
I would start to call my wife 3 or 4 times if she just went to the store by herself. I never did that before. The times she did not answer her phone because she was in line, or just lost her phone charge, for me, it was prayer time.

Prayer is good......... certainly. I did not make any bad confessions, did not beg God to bring her home safely, Nope. I just quoted Psalm 91 over her, while trying to call her over and over, while looking constantly out the window.

I was making my wife miserable, and I lost, by allowing what looked harmless in, something valuable to me. I had lost trust and faith for the protection of my family. Fear is torment. It's not faith, even if you think your praying in faith. Prayer out of fear, is not faith. We have no business fearing anything.

Had I just obeyed what I knew from the very start, and not watched that first, second, third episode. I knew!!! But it looked harmless..... Something about it, did not sit well with me the first time. I would have been free of fear for those years it effected me.

The Lord did speak to me about it.... He said. "NO MORE!!!" I had to be in a place to listen though.

So, if you can't allow something with good conscience, with faith, and no thought of it being right or wrong........ Stay far away!!!! If you question, then for you it's sin.......

Jesus Is Lord.

If you question, then for you it's sin.......

questioning is sin?

fears can come even without watching anything. perhaps some one has already watched something that brings fears to life later.
but like you said we need to trust God.

know that He is in control. Then it's like in psalms even plagues go around you it will not come near you..
you know. life's not just about what we watch and who we listen to.
life has fearful things but our trust should be in God because its all in His hands.

questioning is sin?
It's not far down the road.
Remember the very first question?
Hath God said?

I see what your saying Jari. If I question something about being right or wrong, then I can't continue in faith to do it. Faith does not take two sides to something. Anything not of faith is sin.
What he said. There might be a better way to explain it but I can't think of one.

know that He is in control. Then it's like in psalms even plagues go around you it will not come near you..
you know. life's not just about what we watch and who we listen to.
life has fearful things but our trust should be in God because its all in His hands.
You sort of help explain it here,it's about getting back in his control and that sure knowledge that your in his will.
Uncertainty causes wavering and let not the wavering man think he shall receive anything from God.

Example:
Prayer is good......... certainly. I did not make any bad confessions, did not beg God to bring her home safely, Nope. I just quoted Psalm 91 over her, while trying to call her over and over, while looking constantly out the window.
Mike had to cast down the natural urge to fear or pray in fear because he believes that would be wavering. Is wavering sin?Well..to him it is,yes..and it is to me also but it may not be sin to you Jari if you don't see it as sin.The first 5 years I was a Christian I begged God for things over and over and prayed in fear but it was not sin to me then because I did not know any better.Today it would be a grievous sin to me.

asking God what to do, is not sin.

not knowing what to do, is not sin either.

doing and doubting is more of sin.

(Rom 14:23) And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

doing and doubting is more of sin.
That pretty much sums it up.

It's about being free all the time.
That brings up the next question and to me that was how do I know if I actually believe something is of faith.
Some times we can make some complicated excuses in our head to justify something that is not of love.
I figure if its to complicated to explain it to an 8 year old it is probably not of love.I know I was smarter when I was 8 years old than I am now.

Unbelief is the only enemy.

witch·craft/ˈwiCHˌkraft/

Noun:The practice of magic, esp. black magic; the use of spells and the invocation of spirits.Align yourself with this and you are involved. Even in games. Listen!! Satan does not care about your intent. He only cares about what you say or do.

Align yourself?
i dont believe we are ever subject to satans schemes if we dont want to.
people who dont know God could however become interested in doing real magics.
so maybe thats their choise then.

But litte kids when they play and say "I am a dragon!" "I am magian!" doesnt propably make them become influenced in the spiritual realm.
you must be really interested in it first i think. it shouldnt happen by accident.

I'm not entirely sure the Ouija board is ... authentic. Rather, I don't believe that it actually does anything supernatural. I used to have one as a kid. Never got the thing to work.

Concerning other games, such as videogames, I don't consider them to be bad. I might be a bit biased, as I like playing them... But... Most videogames are simply telling a story. They're not intentionally promoting an idea as a serious religion or ritual. I've played the Silent Hill series (which involves the protagonist battling some bizarre cult) and Shadowman (which involves a voodoo zombie warrior traversing the land of the dead in order to thwart the Biblical demon Legion's attempts to bring about apocalypse). Needless to say, I never joined a cult or started practicing voodoo. I enjoyed playing the games... that's all. And, because of the latter, I now know Mark 5:9 by heart...

With all due respect... Wouldn't running from evil, in a way, allow it to succeed?

Technically we are supposed to overcome evil with good so if you play at least play well.

I was always under the impression that sin is defined as ANYTHING outside Gods will for youre life...IF you have to ask i would say YES it is a sin to play the devils games ..
PHIL 4:8. Whatsoever things are perfect ..IF THERE BE GLORY,HONOR OR PRAISE .Think on these things ...Rev

no. it would be doing what The Word of God says to do.

1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

there is no grey area or yeah buts in being a doer of the word.

edit part:
when i said flee i dont mean head for the hills. kinda metaphorical for keep clean.
