Hi sleepy Edwin, Time to wake up! When we come to Jesus, we come as sinners to a saviour, we come to get saved. We realise our need, we realise we cannot save ourselves. Romans 7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death. Thanks be to God, through - Jesus Christ our Lord? If someone is drowning, do you row your boat up to them, and then tell them to save themselves? or do you grab them and pull them to safety. Smokers and drinkers are addicted, they are prisoners of the enemy and they need to be released. Luke 4:18 " The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recover the sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free. To say they have to release themselves, is to make a mockery of salvation. 1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. This applies to you too Edwin, you too are a sinner, if you say you are not, then you are a liar. Would you like to be left behind with the smoker and the drunkard. We all have sin, even if it is to allow our gaze to rest on the legs of a pretty young girl for that extra moment. Is that any less sinful than a person smoking. We are called to love one another, not find fault and condemn. bless you.How can you know drinking lots of alcohol or even smoking a cigarette on a daily basis is a sin? That's easy to find out! Does becoming drunk or smoking get you closer to God than not dealing with such things? The only acceptable answer is they are sins because they make you stay away from Him and can even kill you by causing serious illnesses that at some point might not be treatable in any hospital any longer. Saying that such stuff is not a problem or you can't lose salvation because you just keep drinking a lot or smoking n amount of cigarettes, is a clear defiance of His Will that is no better than looking for hookers anywhere to do you know what. The very attempt of justifying addictions demonstrates that you either shamelessly ignore the Holy Spirit's warnings or you never repented from your sins but just pretended you did. Sometimes this kind of weird behavior is a consequence of listening to the world's teachings that tell you everything is allowed, everything leads you to a better place. We should keep in mind how blind human flesh is spiritually. Why did I say you could lose your salvation? Salvation is eternal, but the Lord was clear that we should work hard to stay fir in faith till he comes. If you don't care about smoking and He comes to take His Church to the sky or Heaven, why would He take the active smoker or drunkard that didn't obey Him there? To watch you look for a way to replace it with any other addiction? (I know, those already possessing a glorified body won't feel the need to sin, but my point here is that He wouldn't transform someone that still needs to learn a lot from the Gospel, the epistles, the prophets and even Revelations.) Most likely He would prefer to leave the smoker and the drunkard in the world as a last attempt to make him or her repent from their sins after witnessing His Wrath during the Tribulation.
That's why I encourage you smokers and drunkards, no matter if that sounds harsh, to treat such stuff as some of the worst sins from your own perspective so you do get a chance to listen to the Lord, repent from them, let His Holy Spirit guide you and strengthen you in times of need. Say it's just as bad as other stuff as eating a few candies, and He will punish you by hardening your heart making it more difficult for you to repent. Why should they be the worst sins for you? Because those are the sins that can make you leave the Lord behind and love the world, which is the enemy of the Lord. Anyone who loves the world, doesn't know Him or wants to become an anathema despite of having listening to the Gospel.
