“I will bless the Lord who has counseled me;
Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.
I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” (Psalms 16:7-11 NASB’95)
This was a Psalm of David, who was a man of God. Did David ever fail? Yes, he did. But he repented of his sin, and he went right back to following the Lord in obedience to his commands. Was he then perfect in every way? No. But he was a man of God who served the Lord, who followed in the ways of the Lord, and who took seriously the commands of God. He didn’t live for the sinful pleasures of the flesh, but for God who truly was his Lord.
So, this Psalm is coming from the lips of a man of God who served the Lord with his life, who followed in the ways of the Lord, and who heard the Lord speaking to him, and who listened to the voice of the Lord, even if it was in the middle of the night. So, how did he hear God speak? Through His Spirit, I would presume, in his inner being. And how do we hear God speak? Same way as he spoke to David, and also through the written word of God.
But the voice we hear speaking to us in our inner being must not contradict with the Scriptures, and it must not contradict with the character of God, and who he is, and what he is about, and with his design and purpose for our lives. So, we must test the spirits and our inner voices to see if they are of God or not before we accept them as the words of God. For God is not going to lead us to anything that is sinful or that is against his will.
But we must also guard against quenching the Spirit’s voice out of fear of hearing the voice of God in our spirits leading us in the way in which the Lord would have us go. Does the Bible teach us the ways of the Lord? Absolutely! And we need to be students of the Scriptures who obey the word of the Lord intended for us under the New Covenant. But we need to know God’s specific leadings in who to speak to and when and where, too.
And we need to be able to hear the Lord speaking to us in calling us to specific areas of ministry which he has designed for us individually to do so that we know where he has gifted us and what our body part assignments are from God within the universal body of Christ. For we will not all have the same gifts and the same body part assignments. And these are to come from God and not from our own fleshly desires and choices.
So, we need to let the Holy Spirit, living within us who follow Jesus with our lives, to counsel us, even in the middle of the night, in what he wants us to do, and where he wants us to go, and regarding what ministries he has for us, and to whom he wants us to minister, and in what ways. For he may wake us up in the night to pray for someone or to write to someone or to write a poem or a song or a devotion or whatever he desires for us to do.
And when we follow the Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, and in a love response to his callings upon our individual lives, and we become the people of God who he wants us to be, doing what he planned for us to do even before he formed us in the wombs of our mothers, and so sin is no longer what we practice, we will be opposed, even by others who call themselves Christians. But we are not to let this unsettle us (shake us).
But please know that faith in Jesus Christ, which is biblical faith, will lead us to deny self, put sin to death in our lives daily, by the Spirit, and follow our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, and in surrender to his will and purpose for our lives. We will be those who not only obey the written word of God but who follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives in ministering to the body of Christ in our God gifted and given body part assignments.

Lead Me Gently Home, Father
By Will L. Thompson, 1879
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
