Humans started as humans, I believe we may have changed a little and adapted a little over the generations and when our genes mixed and the environment necessitated certain changes eg extra layers of fat for cold weather .....these things had to happen for our survival.
As far as I know there isn't any substanciated claims for a missing link, many hoaxes yes, eg ape jaw bone put together with human for instance.
As I understand it there are different species of ape that may share similar but not the same characteristics as humans eg five fingers etc...but you have to remember that all living things share similar characteristics eg a mouth for eating ..... if you look at genetics there is only a certain percentage difference between us and a cow for example in our genetic codes. God created us so we and other creatures could survive on this planet which might necessitate lungs for breathing air etc...we are bound to have similarities as we are in the same environment as many other living creatures with a genetic code for life on this planet.
Many creatures may have changed according to their environment but that is a given. Is it not possible that the potter makes different creatures out of similar clay in that it can be molded, sharing similar but not the same ingredients? eg all clay contains water, clay might have iron in the more iron the more terracotta, buff has a little iron and white doesn't have much if any. Is it not conceivable that God used the materials/clay around him to make the different creatures?
I believe humans used to be shorter than we are today based on diet .....but we did nevertheless start out as humans that is my understanding.

I think that we have a slight difference of opinion in that you think God had a cement mixer and I think God had a kiln.
