Should a Christian Participate in the Lottery?

To be fair, we can't assume that someone who plays the lottery is a money-grubber and doesn't spend their money on something beneficial to others. Why can't someone tithe, donate, and spend a few bucks on a lottery ticket? And if that person wins, why would you assume they'd just keep it all to them selfish selves? Granted, this is probably usually the case, but hey, let's not judge someone for playing the lottery.

For the record, I do not play the lottery. And for the record, I do tithe with every paycheck. And anytime someone comes to me asking for spare change, I give them a little more than that (if I have it on me). But I'd play the lottery. I've gone to Reno, played with $20 in quarters on the slots, won around $40, and spent it all on stuffed animals for my wife. I was playing for fun, not caring whether or not I won anything. So, if I had the choice between a king-size Hershey bar and a lottery ticket, heck, I'd take the ticket. It wouldn't be a lack of faith in God. It'd just be a "let's see what happens" type of thing... if God wanted me to win, I'd win. If not, I wouldn't.

And if I won millions of dollars, I'd buy houses and rent them out to good people at low rates, and I'd start a business and hire good people and pay them high wages. I'd also give to schools and food banks and charities and churches. Sure, I'd buy myself a nice house and a couple nice cars, but nothing lavish. A 4 bedroom with basement living for my parents, and a new Chevy Suburban would do me. ;)

Man's law...

The Salvation Army has a policy that to be a soldier in the army you are not allowed to drink, smoke or gamble. The lottery is a big gamble as the chances of winning are so low.

Well yes, but Jesus never addressed smoking, and He turned water into wine.

As long as I'm not spending money I "don't have" to buy lottery tickets, I don't worry about it. I know God will provide for me no matter what.

I'm not going to win over God's objection, that's for sure. And it just wouldn't make sense to me to get upset because I didn't win.

I personally think I could do a lot more good in the world with a million dollars than I can do with what's in my wallet at the moment.

However, I am rather humbled by the fact that if God agreed with me then I'd have already won the lottery by now.

Still...every time the mega-ball gets up into the 100+ millions, I slip over to the 7-11 and buy a ticket....just in case God has changed His mind ;)

If we really believe that God supplies all our needs then we have no need to waste good money on buying lottery tickets in the first place.

Far better to use money we have spare to give to a worthy charity rather than spend it on a lottery ticket.

Regarding smoking, our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit so it is wise to seek not to smoke. Smoking also can shorten a life here on earth as has been shown so many times.

We're travelling on the same train of thought.
