Tai Chi

Hello Folks,

I would like to say one thing that might help clear up some confusion concerning soft martails arts such as Tai Chi Chaun. Much of what is considered Tai Chi simply isn't. It is reduced to a physical exercise and many will not touch the spirit behind Tai Chi.
I have learned when speaking to Chinese people about martial arts, that a lot of them are ignorant of the nature of internal martial arts.
So it is hardly surprising that there are going to be misunderstandings about these things in the Western World.

I would also like to say that some on this post have mentioned philosophy and Taoism in connection with Tai Chi, I heard this years ago when someone said the five forms of Hsing-i were connected to the five forces of creation, water, fire, earth etc. These ideas may have came about through a group of Chinese intellectuals waxing philosophical, and are not really anything to do with the actual practice of martial arts. In fact there is no religion - as we in the west would understand it - connected with the Internal matrial arts: Tai Chi Chaun, Hsing-i or Pa-Kua. But there is a spiritual entity involved in these arts. Because the force/strength used is not natural physical strength. In fact such strength is the sort of thing a novice has, and is considered weak and useless. When I practiced these things, I learned forms that involved deflecting and defeating an attack from my blind side i.e. without the use of physical sight, this involves discerning the movement before the actual strike has a chance to impact, I could go into this subject at some length but it is not edifying, all I will say is it's not natural.

Some Christians may do Tai chi for exercise and that's all it will be a physical exercise. But one day the penny might drop and they will come to a watershed experience whereby the spirit behind Tai Chi becomes real. For the Christian this will usually be recognized for what it is, a spirit that is not of God. For the none Christian it will be recognized as life but not as they know it. Sometimes the strangeness of the encounter will prevent them from going further, but not always. For those who do go down that path they will need deliverance from spiritual bondage.

Blessings,
Tonyb

It's not pleasant writing about such things so I would just like to finish by saying isn't Jesus wonderful?

On a similar subject, I occasionally practise Kung Fu and we make use of 'internal energy' in our training. There is no clearing of the mind or anything, it's just making better use of our muscles by using positive messages instead of negative ones, for example we have an exercise called "the unbendable arm" where we show that by 'telling' our arm to "keep straight" instead of "don't bend", it becomes very difficult for someone to bend our arm with pgysical strength.

As far as I can tell this would not clash with any of God's teachings, can anyone confirm this for me?

Quick question...
Do you happen to straighten out your pinky finger while you do this?

We've got a saying in Afrikaans it goes like this: Sies!
The word means awefull, bad mannered or you use it when someone makes a joke like Nigh, you funny guy :)

Honestly it is not a joke. I have had some training with a local police department years ago, and part of the training was to fight off a larger, stronger guy who is trying to take YOUR gun out of your holster. While doing this, you are to straighten out your pinky and it increases your ability to hold the gun in the holster.

It was also demonstrated by 2 men standing facing each other. Man 1 puts his right wrist onto man 2's shoulder. Man 2 takes BOTH hands on top of man 1's elbow joint and tries to bend his arm down. If man 1 straightens out his pinky, it is 4 times as hard.

So it really wasn't a joke. I don't want you to get that impression. I was genuinely curious.

God bless,
Nigh

Hello brethren, treasure your western heritage, which has evolved from Chirtianity and do not meddle with eastern arts, spiritual or otherwise. If the source is bad, it IS bad. Do not open yourself up to demonic influences. If you come from where I come from and receive salvation, you will understand what I am saying. Everything has a source, from God or the devil. Nothing is circular or 'innocent'.

My advise, flee all martial arts. "Flee all appearances of evil"

As a 5 yr vet and still a practionier of martial arts you have to be relaxed and clear minded, to relax the muscle so you won't be so tense during training or practicing forms (patterns) and what not. Like everybody said that most westerns use Tai Chi as a physical excersis to clear your mind from everyday stress, its also used to train yourself in self defense. Either way it will benefit your looking to do it for relaxation, sport or as a ministery; its how we apply it to our culture that we can use it.

Hi Miladolo,

Personally I wouldn't get involved in martial arts period. The Apostle Paul said, “What is not of faith is sin.” If you cannot actively involve your faith in Christ in your practice of martial arts then it is sinful for you.
One way of testing this is to give thanks to the Lord Jesus for the art you practice, preferably in a praise and worship meeting. If you can, then it's alright to continue doing it.
If however, it is a soft art like the ones I've previously mentioned then I believe it is always wrong.

The style you mention sounds very much like an external or hard form of martial arts.
Could you tell me what style it is or is based on?

It makes no difference, it's whatever you're comfortable with.

It's Hong Lung Do (Way of the Red Dragon) Kung Fu and the version is based on Atado Pai style with a more modern feel.
