john,It depends on the emotion. Replace the word "emotions" in your sentence with a specific emotion and the outcome is very different - "Allowing hatred to lead us or direct us...", sure I can agree with that. "Allowing love to lead us or direct us...", what is the problem with that?
Jesus showed emotion all throughout his life. Suppressing our emotions and denying them is flat out unhealthy, and a very typical male response (somehow showing emotions is considered "unmasculine" by some). Look at some of the responses in this very thread, James - "I was beat if I displayed any emotion as a kid". And you want to perpetuate this myth that emotions are bad for us?
All I can think of is that the word "emotion" is being used incorrectly here and really referring to "thoughts", which is what the Bible verses you presented are talking about. One should be guarding their thoughts and actions, but their emotions? No, I'm sorry, there is nothing biblical or healthy about that.
You are talking about people having emotions and this is right and I am very emotional - however showing emotions and being controlled by them are two different things. Dont get compassion mixed up in there as simple raw emotions.
We walk by Faith and not sight or you can change sight for emotions or feelings. Feelings and or emotions if gone un-governed will begin to dictate how one thinks. Emotions must be kept under control but this does NOT say in any way shape or form that showing emotions is wrong.
God Bless
