“O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Lord, You know it all.
You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.” (Psalms 139:1-6 NASB1995)
God, who created us, knows us inside and out. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows our thoughts even before we think them. He knows how we are going to respond to our life situations even before they happen. So, if we want to have a better understanding of ourselves, and why we think the way we do, or why we do the things we do, we should ask him. He knows. For he made us and he is intimately acquainted with all our ways.
“For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.” (Psalms 139:13-16 NASB1995)
God, who created us, gave us the parents that he gave us, whether they were good or they were bad parents. He is the one who formed us in the wombs of our mothers. And we were fearfully and wonderfully made by him. And he created us for a purpose, that we should bow to him as Lord, and that we should follow him in his ways, that we should leave our lives of sin behind us, and that we should now walk in obedience to his commands.
He made us all uniquely different and gifted in different ways with a purpose in mind of who we would become and what we would do in obedience to him and to his will for our lives. For us who believe in Jesus as our Savior and Lord, God has a particular design and purpose for us within the body of Christ, which are our “body parts,” which are our assignments from God. And his Spirit has gifted us with spiritual gifts to be used for God’s glory.
Not one of us is here by accident. And we are not here to design our own purpose and destiny. God/Jesus is not to be someone we just claim faith in for salvation from sin so that, when we die, we get to go to heaven and not to hell. He is to be our life! He is to be our purpose for living! And our lives are to be surrendered to him to do what he has designed for us, even if it is not something we would have ever imagined in our wildest dreams.
So, we don’t just “believe in Jesus” and then continue to chart our own course, and to go our own way, and to make our own decisions about life and how we want to live it. We should pray through every major decision in our lives, such as where we should go to school, or what job we should take, or where we should live, or who we should marry, and what ministry and giftedness he has for us and how he wants to use us for his purposes.
For example, I would not be sitting at a desk at 5 a.m. writing a devotion if God had not called me to do this. I would not be writing devotions and posting them on the internet. I would not have written any songs, and few poems, and no memes, and I would have recorded no talk videos or written any short testimonial books. I would still be teaching the Bible to a small group of people in person which would not be reaching the world.
So, the point of all of this that I am sharing here is to say that God did not create us so that we could just live however we want, choosing our own life course. He has a specific design and purpose for each one of our lives, and he has a specific assignment and giftedness for us within the universal body of Christ (the church) if we will accept it, and if we will follow his lead and go where he sends us and do what he has called us specifically to do.

I’ll Go Where You Want Me To Go
Lyrics by Mary Brown, 1891
Music by Carrie E. Rounsefell, 1894
It may not be on the mountain’s height,
Or over the stormy sea;
It may not be at the battle’s front,
My Lord will have need of me;
But if by a still, small voice He calls,
To paths that I do not know,
I’ll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in Thine,
I’ll go where You want me to go.
Perhaps today there are loving words
Which Jesus would have me speak;
There may be now in the paths of sin,
Some wand’rer whom I should seek;
O Savior, if Thou wilt be my guide,
Though dark and rugged the way,
My voice shall echo Thy message sweet,
I’ll say what You want me to say.
There’s surely somewhere a lowly place,
In earth’s harvest fields so white,
Where I may labor through life’s short day,
For Jesus the Crucified;
So trusting my all to Thy tender care,
And knowing Thou lovest me,
I’ll do Thy will with a heart sincere,
I’ll be what You want me to be.
I’ll go where You want me to go, dear Lord,
O’er mountain, or plain, or sea;
I’ll say what You want me to say, dear Lord,
I’ll be what You want me to be.
