The Gifts of Miracles & Healing Today?

The problem of human sickness is as real as it is difficult. To desire and search for cures is both understandable and, sometimes, rewarding. Furthermore, the miraculous and spectacular is intriguing and fascinating. The combination of these two -- the search for healing and the desire to perform the miraculous -- was indeed the experience of the early church. New Testament records abound with miraculous events, not the least of which are the miraculous healing of people who were diseased.

Some in the present day have desired and even claimed to duplicate the experience of the early church as recorded in the New Testament. With this, of course, has come both excitement and skepticism -- as well as much discussion. The attempt here is to survey the relevant Biblical data and so provide an accurate guide in this discussion.

Relevant Data

Matthew 17:19-20
-- The disciples fail in an attempted miracle because of their lack of faith.

Luke 10:17
-- The disciples cast out demons; no details are given.

Acts 2:43
-- The apostles perform "many wonders and signs"; no details are given.

Acts 3:3-16
-- Peter heals the lame man at the gate of the Temple.

Acts 5:1-11
-- Ananias and Sapphira die at the word of Peter.

Acts 5:12-16
-- The apostles heal many; some are healed merely by being under Peter's shadow as he passed by.

Acts 6:8
-- "Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people."

Acts 8:6-7, 13
-- Philip, in Samaria, performs miracles and signs, among which were healings and casting out of demons.

Acts 9:32-34
-- Peter heals a paralyzed man in Lydda named Aeneas.

Acts 9:36-42
-- Peter, upon request by the believers in Joppa, raises Dorcas from the dead.

Acts 13:6-11
-- Paul blinds Elymas (Barjesus), the false prophet.

Acts 14:3
-- Paul and Barnabas perform signs and wonders in Lystra; no details are given.

Acts 14:8-10
-- Paul heals a lame man while in Lystra.

Acts 19:11-12
-- Paul performed many "special miracles," healing and casting out demons with the use of handkerchiefs and aprons.

Acts 20:9-12
-- Paul raises Eutychus from the dead.

Acts 28:1-6
-- Paul is unharmed by a snakebite on Melita.

Acts 28:8-9
-- Paul heals many diseases while on Melita.

Romans 15:15-19
-- Paul declares his ministry established by his "mighty signs and wonders."

2 Corinthians 12:12
-- Paul declares that his miracles, signs, and wonders form a part of his apostolic credentials.

Hebrews 2:3-4
-- The author speaks of the miracles, signs, and wonders performed by those who first heard Christ.

Observations

1. The healings were instantaneous. Further treatment was not necessary (Acts 3:1-11).

2. The healings were complete. Those who were healed could immediately resume their normal activities unhindered by the sickness in any way (Acts 9:32-34).

3. The healings were permanent. This is not to say that the ones healed were never again sick, but it is to say that the next day when the "healer" was gone, the sickness was not returned (Acts 14:4).

4. Those with the gift of healings had the ability to heal organic illnesses as well. They did not heal mere psychosomatic illness (Acts 3:1-11; 5:14-16).

5. Those with the gift of healings were not selective in whom they would heal. They could heal anyone (Acts 5:14-16; 28:8-9).

6. Those with the gift of healings could heal at will. There were no conditions placed on the ones being healed (Acts 3:1-11). The same was true of other miracles (Acts 13:11-12).

7. Faith on the part of the one healed was not a requirement or condition. Faith was often rewarded, but it was never stated to be a condition of a person's healing, nor was it ever used as an excuse for a failed attempt to heal (Acts 3:1-11; 9:40).

8. The attempts at healing were always successful. (The only exception to this is the one occasion recorded in Matthew 17:20 when the disciples lacked faith.)

9. The healings were usually performed for unbelievers (Acts 3:1-11; 5:14-16).

10. The healings were usually unsolicited (Acts 3:1-11).

11. The healings were secondary to preaching (Luke 9:6). This is also seen in Acts 20:17-38 where Paul reviews his ministry in Ephesus and makes no mention of his great miracles performed there (cf. 19:11-12), only his faithfulness in ministering the Word). No man was ever given a "healing ministry."

12. Those with the gift of healings could also raise the dead upon request (Acts 9:40).

13. Although the healings were not at all hidden, they were generally performed in relative privacy and never in a public healing service. "Healing services" were never a part of the early church (Acts 3:1-11).

14. Miracles and healings were performed by the apostles and their close associates. Philip and Stephen are the only non-apostolic healers.

15. The healings were never performed by a supposed "slaying in the Spirit" or the like.

16. The healings were performed free of any financial charge. Neither were any souvenirs sold or offerings taken.

17. The healings and miracles could not be denied. They were indisputable feats of power (Acts 4:14-17).

18. The powers associated with the gifts of miracles and healings did not extend beyond healing, casting out demons, and raising the dead. These powers did not include the ability to perform tricks, heal animals or raise them from the dead, or the like.

19. Healings were performed in various ways: by touching (Acts 3:6); by being touched (Acts 5:15); usually without physical contact of any kind (Acts 5:14-16; 9:32-34); by speaking (Acts 14:10); with the use of handkerchiefs and aprons (Acts 19:11-12); with prayer (Acts 9:38-41); usually without prayer (Acts 3:1-11; 28:8-9); and sometimes even in absence (Acts 19:11-12).

20. The writer of the book of Hebrews, writing as a second generation Christian, speaks of the miraculous gifts in the past tense (Heb.2:3-4).

Summary and Conclusion

The gift of healings appears in the New Testament as a miraculous (sign) gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostolic company (2 Cor. 12:12) in order to confirm the new message which they were preaching (Heb.2:3-4). The gift involved the ability to cure physical diseases apart from the normal healing processes. The gift consisted of the ability to heal sicknesses and diseases at will, without medical treatment or any other curing agents. The gift is closely associated with that of miracles (the broader term, evidently) and functioned at all levels of human sickness -- physical and spiritual. The man so gifted was able to heal organic illnesses (e.g., 3:1-11, a congenital illness), raise the dead (9:36-42), and even bring physical judgment (5:1-11; 13:6-11). This gift seems also to have included the ability to cast out demons (19:12), which then would be its spiritual dimension.

These observations are most revealing, especially in comparison with present-day claims to the gift. If there are similarities they fade quickly in comparison with differences which are much greater and more obvious. The gift of miracles enjoyed by the early church at the hands of the apostolic company appears to have been a unique experience which served its purpose and then faded away.

Re: The gifts of miracles and healings today

There are many points in Mr. Zaspel's message that could be discussed; too many to deal with in one post. However, one thing I noticed ,which I think should be discussed, is that he seems to believe that the apostles had been given ownership of the gifts of healing and that they had control over their use.

There is a little noticed verse in the Gospel of Luke that casts doubt on that concept. It's in Luke's account of the healing of the paralytic whose friends dug a hole in the roof to lower him down to where Jesus was: "One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick." (Lk 5;17b)

The phrase "power of the Lord" refers to the Holy Spirit and it indicates that the miracles of Jesus were done by the power of the Spirit. Jesus was/is God but keep in mind that he had surrendered use of his divine prerogatives and was dependent upon the Holy Spirit (see Philippians 2:5-11). The apostles were also dependent upon the Holy Spirit's guidance and power in doing their works. They were not the healers, the Holy Spirit did the healings through them. And if the Holy Spirit wasn't present to heal, no healing occured.

SLE

I have to agree with SLE here as well, even Christ could'nt do great works in some places because of the peoples unbelief.

Mar 6:4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
Mar 6:5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed [them].
Mar 6:6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

We also have an account of a blind man who Christ had to pray for him twice, as the first time Jesus tried to heal him, he said i see men walking as trees. Its our faith thats the problem, not the gifts.

Mar 8:23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.
Mar 8:24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
Mar 8:25 After that he put [his] hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
Mar 8:26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell [it] to any in the town.

God bless you brother, thanks for the heads up:shade: But what i do know is little compared to what the spirit can give, with prayer and patients. Just in the last year or so i learned a lot from other men of God, and woman of God as well. God is no respecter of persons, but will give his spirit of truth to all. The holy spirit is the the real teacher to all saints. Me and you are just the vessels:) May the grace of God be with you and yours always.:star:

SLE makes the observation that much could be discussed, and this is true.

1. The healings were instantaneous. Further treatment was not necessary (Acts 3:1-11).

In this case 'instantaneous' is the word. This would be the favoured method and result for all of us who preach Jesus. Of course.

At my A of G fellowship, only last Sunday a lady was asked to come forward to give testimony. This 84 year old lady, in the fellowship since a child, father an elder in the 1920s, in the Pentecostal outpouring that birthed Assemblies of God, has been our concern in prayer over the last months. Not able to attend church, unable to retain food....and so on. We felt the end was near.

Two weeks back those sick were asked to stand for prayer. She stood. After prayer did not feel any better. But the following day her pains had gone. Two weeks later,.........after proving in her own life that the Lord had done it, she gave testimony.

I mention that because it is recent, just yesterday.

In Luke 17:14 It reports of the lepers for whom Jesus had offered prayer for healing......."as they went, they were cleansed" Our friend was healed.....as she went........Amen!

We read the scriptures without which we would be lost completely. But God has a thousand ways to answer every prayer........Amen?

Healing Jesus, thank You for healing the lady at stephen's church. You have done great things! Amen.

Stephen lives in Yorkshire in England styles.

God is a God of miracles still today and it is good to hear what He is doing in the lives of His children.

Oh, at first I thought you was talking about someone different and then knew you was talking to the person in the comment but instead I just didn't care but just let the comment there but then I thought you talking about a Evangelist, Elder Stephens church from Bishop Eddie Long church "New Birth North Atlanta." I said this because Elder is in my church revival and he going to be preaching bout the next hour from now which I can't wait going to church!

But we did had a little prayer service last morning ago and then he preach a sermon on about evangelism and witnessing about the lord out in the street and stuff.
And then we when out in ministering to people on the street and giving free CD’s to some people and some flyers and in some point it was hard because where I live there people that don’t want to hear about God “THE Ghettos.”

I thought I remember Elder said that where I live is amazing place with many people to be witnessing to and I remember from I was small as real small child and from being young adult right now and never seen no Christian to preach out in downtown or in any part of the community and all there is Jehovah Witness around and we got caught in the Jehovah Witness and think it was funny because I was like saying hi and shaking there hands and I thought the 2 women was Pentecostal because they was wearing skirts and Elder came in and took the paper way from my friend and gave it back because he knew they was the JW. IT WAS FUNNY.
But then the best part was that the man was deliver and he going to be coming to our church today and he was really funny and cool and I wish I could say more about it because I have to get ready for church now and also not just that, I do feel like not typing to much but maybe I will do it later about the man that got deliver in downtown. BUT. Just maybe.. LOL.

And yes I believed in the miracles of GOD for today!

The Lord gives these gifts to us, but it is we who use these gifts. It is by our faith imparted by the Holy Spirit, that these things happen.
When Jesus walked on the water, and Peter got out of the boat and walked on it too, but when he took his eyes off of Jesus and looked at the water he doubted and fell in.
It was Peters faith that he walked on water and Peters doubt that made him sink.

Miracles for today

I read this post with interest since I have had much trouble with opposite teaching in the subject and have even been excluded from a church for daring to believe in miracles for today. Of course there are some charlatans just as there were in the Apostles day (eg. Simon in Ac 8) and we must pray for spiritual discernment to be able to tell the difference. In my opinion, the gift of spiritual discernment is more important than any other gift mentioned in 1Co 12 because it helps prevent us from falling into many of the pitfalls in this life.

I have had many miracles in my life time and those around me!
I do not think anything has changed!
But ,The LORD said? When I return ,will I find faith on the earth!
Faith ,works by LOVE!
I have found,Many times the healing came ,when it looked like ? All hope was gone!
I do not know why some are healed and many others are not?
But,It is true, The lORD could not heal ,where He grow much?
I know and am certain .Miracles are still done by our LORD daily in this world!
I go to a church ,where almost all the people in it ,has experianced healings.
one woman was DEAD , they came to get her and she arose off the cart .the doctor fail to his knees and accepted JESUS CHRIST!
I my self have known death twice.I died both ways .The first time in my sins , thinking I was saved.I was not.
The 2nd time , I had been born again. This time I went home NEW JERUSALEM.
My last son daniel ,was dropped at birth by the nurse, after the doctor yelled at her and was dead .they tried very hard to bring him back ,but gave up after a time.I prayed fior my son, Now he is 13.They gave him a 3 on his gap score . Which is very bad.He is now 13 and very smart.
I was told by the LORD about? 3 or 4 years ago to start giving my testamonies. When ,HE said this,I typed 14 pages on stories of miracles in my life time. Since then have had more. We must ask ,then thank HIM as if we have recieved ,what we have asked. Then if we have not recieved? Look for them ,knowing ,We will surly recieve!
Most of the time we will.
There has been times ,I forgot ,then recieved.
We have the very same HOLY GHOST the first church had .His WORD has not changed. He is ,no repecter of persons.
He does not love you more than me ,or me more than you!
HE loved the whole world , Every man women and child .Enough to give a part of HIMSELF.
Abraham was a type of GODS LOVE.GOD did not withhold HIS son from us.Giving HIM for all of mankind.
HE has revealed with action ,HIS LOVE FOR YOU.
He has proven , just how much HE was and is willing to give for you .He only asks we believe !

Goodness, spirit1st! That is a testimony to the healing and protective powers of God. It is like a chapter out of the gospels. It think that scripture, "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief" is very apt. (Mat 13:58)

God bless

It is the Holy Spirit that works through us that healing happens, it took 400 years before God found one with enough faith to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and to perform miracles.
The sin of Adam and Eve was rebellion, but they rebelled because of doubt. They doubted Gods instruction.
Faith is imparted by the Holy Spirit, but lack of fellowship with the Lord and sin keeps us from the word of the Holy Spirit.
Get into our prayer closets and praise and worship him, and give him glory, sing songs of praise to him.
Pray without ceasing.
Memorize Scripture, and use it in your daily thoughts.
Be obedient to his word and his voice and you will be given the faith and these gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must quit looking to others for signs and start being bold and manifesting our own to the Glory of Jesus.

....... or as my Christian mentor used to say, "Rejoicing night and day—as we walk the pilgrim way."

i KNOW AND AM SURE?
GOD WANTS US TO LIVE AND WALK IN OUR INNER MAN!
THEN WE WILL SEE MUCH MORE OF THE SIGNS AND MIRACLES IN OUR LIVES!

1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

THIS is our spirit, HE wants us walking in and living in!
Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

If you look carefully through the four Gospels at the ministry of Jesus, you will see that in the great majority of specific healings that took place, the person's faith was emphasized. For instance, the woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8:48), the centurion's servant (Matt. 8:13), the two blind men (Matt. 9:29), and the list goes on. In fact, of all the healings that took place where a specific person was dealt with, only 3 or 4 were initiated by Jesus, (Man at the pool of Bethesda, John 5:2-8 for example).
As for the Gifts of Healing and The Gift of Working of Miracles, these are really tools for the Body of Christ working in cooperation with the Holy Spirit. He is our helper, our teacher, the one who shows us things to come. It is His power that is on the earth today. But, as we see in 1 Corinthians 12, these only operate as the Spirit wills. They are not toys thrown about arbitrarily by just anyone who happens to be present. I believe God wants very much to perform miracles and healings for anyone who needs them, but He needs willing, submitted vessels who know His word to flow through. We see evidence of this in the life of Jesus. He was constantly separating Himself to pray and fellowship with the Father. Sometimes He would spend all night in prayer. But the next day, you would see the evidence of that time spent in prayer.
Some would argue, "But that's Jesus, you know. He is the Son of God." But Philippians 2:7 tells us that He "Made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men." In other words, Jesus functioned on the earth just like any other man anointed by the Holy Spirit. It had to be this way in order for Him to be tempted like other men. Hebrews 4:15 says, "He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." If He were operating on the earth as God, He couldn't have been tempted like us, because James 1:13 tells us that God "cannot be tempted with evil."
So how do we obtain the faith required to receive healing and operate in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit? Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word God." We have to pray and study God's word on these subjects so that we will be ready when the Holy Spirit sees His opportunity to act. As for healing for ourselves, we can access that at any time. We simply have to know what belongs to us as born-again believers in Jesus. Galatians 3:13 tells us that "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us." If you look in Deuteronomy 28, you can quickly see a detailed description of the curse of the law. We may or may not see an instantaneous manifestation of healing, but if we will stay with it and don't get into unbelief, God will honor His word.
