I would advise all to stick with the KJV because the wording is very important to understanding.
The book of Revelation is very symbolic, and one needs to pay close attention to the wording because that is where you will find the clues you need in other parts of scripture to help you unlock the many mysteries found in God's words. But it is only by the Holy Spirit one can receive this understanding into the mystery. God's 2 witnesses (Word and Spirit) are "in" all his saints, it is the bodies of the saints that are lying in the streets of this "spiritual" city. Just as God's saints are also referred to in scripture as the "holy city" and as Jerusalem and Zion.
Notice the wording....
Revelation 11:7-9 "And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. (war against the saints who have the testimony of Jesus Christ in them)8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which "spiritually" is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves."
Now compare the above to the wording below here.....
Isaiah 51:16-23
16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.
17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
20 Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God.
21 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
22 Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
23 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over."
The above verses show the first tribulation of the Jews and the days of vengeance upon God’s people, but notice this cup of fury is taken from them and then given to the Nations. Also notice above God calls his people Zion, and Jerusalem (the holy city), and they lie in the streets of this "spiritual" place, and then God tells them to awake as in the resurrection; like the bodies of the 2 witnesses in the streets.
Now notice the wording again....
Revelation 11:11
And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Compare to....
Hosea 6:2
After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
Revelation 11:9 "And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
Again compare spiritual things with spiritual……
Psalm 79:2-3 "The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.3 Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them."
Also notice what Paul says here concerning the killing of the prophets of God…
Romans 11 “I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
3 Lord, they have killed "thy prophets", and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself "seven thousand" men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
5 Even so then at this present time also there is "a remnant" according to the election of grace.”
Again compare the wording used in Revelation concerning "the prophets" killed, the "seven thousand" men, and "the remnant"….
Revelation 11:10-13 “And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men "seven thousand": and "the remnant" were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.”
Jerusalem is also compared spiritually as Sodom…..
Revelation 11:8 “And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.”
Here the Lord is speaking to the people of Jerusalem and Judah…
Isaiah 1:9-10 “Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.10 Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.”
Paul confirms the same here concerning Israel…
Romans 9:27-29 “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
Again comparing people as Sodom…
Jeremiah 23:14 “I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness; they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.”
