'And
the times of this ignorance God winked at;
but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Because He hath appointed a day,
in the which He will judge the world in righteousness
by that man whom He hath ordained;
whereof He hath given assurance unto all men,
in that He hath raised Him from the dead.'
(Act 17:30)
Hello there,
@TheWordIsOne,
I found your OP thought provoking, and the verses you chose interesting: for which I thank you. Though I do not believe that knowledge in itself is sin, or that simplicity and ignorance are sinful in themselves either. Neither do the latter excuse wrong doing,
* The knowledge of good and evil which Adam and Eve received brought with it responsibility, and made them subject to judgment and death. Before this they were in a state of innocence.
* In Romans 2:18-21, Paul shows that ignorance cannot be used as an excuse for not seeking after God, for the very heavens declare the knowledge of God.
* Paul's testimony:-
'And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me,
for that He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious:
but I obtained mercy, because
I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation,
that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. '
(1 Tim. 1:12-15)
* Peter tells the People of Israel:-
'The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob,
the God of our fathers, hath glorified His Son Jesus;
whom ye delivered up, and denied Him in the presence of Pilate,
when he was determined to let him go.
But ye denied the Holy One and the Just,
and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. ... ' (v.15)
' ... And now, brethren, I wot that
through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.(v.17)
But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all His prophets,
that Christ should suffer, He hath so fulfilled.
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,
when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
And He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things,
which God hath spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.'
(Act 3:13-15 & 17-21)
* Paul tells the people of Athens:-
' Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God,
we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
And the times of this ignorance God winked at;
but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Because He hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness
by That Man whom He hath ordained;
whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.'
(Act 17:29-31)
* These are just a few evidences from Scripture regarding man's ignorance and God's abundant mercy and grace.
Praise His Name!
Thank you
In Christ Jesus
