The UK - for those who don't know!

Inspired by something I saw elsewhere on this site, I thought I'd give you guys a quick geography lesson on the UK - seeing as this site seems to have a lot of Americans who appear to have a bit of trouble!

The UK is made up of 4 countries - England, Scotland (they traditionally wear kilts and tarten, unintelligible accents), Wales (land of song, rugby, Anthony Hopkins, Charlotte Church and Catherine Zeta Jones are all Welsh) and Northern Ireland. For UK you could substitute Great Britain.

Referring to the UK or Great Britain as 'England' is not only incorrect but also potentially insulting to the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. Imagine us referring to all Americans as 'Texans' and you'll have some idea.

At present the UK Parliament governs the whole country but more and more power is being granted to Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has a similar set up.

So now you know! :D

Thank you very much I am always willing to learn. I must say that I am rather embaressed that I didnt know this ( I was born in England American parents raised in America). Geography has never been a good subject for me and thank you God bless. Joyfully ~ Jlu

Thanks Maven. I've studied the geography but always found it confusing to keep it straight. You explained it simply. I guess it's kinda like North America being made up of the United States, Mexico & Canada...then there's South America...oh well, it can all be hard to keep straight.

Simplified...we are all God's children. Thank goodness He doesn't separate us!!
Thanks for helping us understand.

Thank you for sharing :) I was one of them a bit confused too :P

uk definition [Web Answer]
Noun: UK. A monarchy in northwestern Europe occupying most of the British Isles; divided into England and Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland - United Kingdom , Great Britain , GB , Britain , United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Funny story-i used to work as a tailor in Germany on American bases kitting out the Gis and officers in suits for formal occasions etc.The company i worked for used to be called "Alexandre of England" but were forced to change it to "Alexandre of London"as a lot of Americans were`nt familiar with England but were with London. Its not all one sided though,if you asked the average brit he probably coulnt name half of your states!

In deffence of the "normal Brit", he has 50 states to remember, we have 4 "states". It doesnt' quite equal out. :|

Word of warning, never say to a scot or welshman:"so you must be from England then?"(they tend to get upset about that)

Or when they say they're from Wales or Scotland, never ask "But isn't that in England" - it would be the same as referring to all Americans as North Mexicans :shade:

Yeah, I always thought of Ireland, and Scotland as completely separate countries with their own parliament or congress etc... and never thought "UK, Britain, or Great Britain" even applied to them. I always thought of those names as 'other' names for England. Kinda like "the US, or America, or the states, or those darn yankees(lol)" for The United States of America. And I completely forgot that Wales existed. :embarasse Now I know. TY

God bless,
Nigh

Excellent! Only another 250 million to go..... :D

LOL!
And all Americans are not "Yankees".
And all Canadians do not live in igloos.
And all Americans don't live near California and don't know Hollywood celebrities.

And the truth shall set us free...... :shade:

confused too
