The words 'I am' in the New Testament

Hello @Lavender22,

Thank you for your entry.

How wonderful it must have been for the disciples to have known the Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh, to have walked and talked with Him, sat at His feet and listened to the words of life that He spoke. They 'handled him', in the familiar way of friends, sitting down to eat and drink with Him, and He washed their feet. We can know Him in the flesh no longer, for He is now at God's right hand in the heavenlies. However we can know Him in spirit, which is a far more enduring knowledge, isn't it? for it is for eternity: and He is in us and we in Him.

With love in Christ Jesus
Chris
Hi Chris,
Thank you for your post.
At the end you had written that we know Him in spirit, which is a far more enduring knowledge. For it is for eternity: and He is in us and we in Him.

I was thinking of this and remembered 1 John 4:4
"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

' ... ... the words that I speak unto you,
they are spirit, and they are life.'
(John 6:63b)

Hi @Lavender22,

These words have been coming to the forefront of my mind for some time now: that it is the words that Jesus spoke that we are to 'eat' and 'drink' , for they are 'spirit' and they are 'life'. For ' The flesh profiteth nothing'. The Lord Jesus Christ was going to ascend up to where He was before, but the words that He spoke would remain with those to whom He spoke and with us through the written word, and be their life giving spiritual food and drink and ours. That extends to the epistles too, and what was spoken concerning His person and His work there, for the Apostles were sent by Him to make Him known. The Old Testament also testifies concerning Him, so that the whole word of God is a testament to Him, and is all food and drink to us in the spirit.

'It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.'
(Joh 6:63)

* You refer to 1 John 4:4. 'He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world;' Reminding me of John 14:10:-

'Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?
the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:
but the Father that dwelleth in me, He doeth the works.'
(Joh 14:10)

* It was the Father that indwelt Christ, Who spoke through Him, and Who did the works: and it is the Spirit of Christ that indwells us, the spirit of sonship whereby we can call the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ our Father too. ' The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.' . He indeed is greater than he that is in the world !!

Just thoughts Lavender22,

Thank you for them.
In Christ Jesus
Chris

That's great @complete, showing the three in one relationship of God. With the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
That living by the spirit and not the flesh, is living by the grace and power of He who is in us. For He is greater than he that is in the world.
He who is greater is in fact the greatest, for He is God, the great I am .
We are humbled by that and He is our strength in our weakness.

Greetings,

In the Gospel according to John,

Jesus 'sheds light' on I AM that I AM or I AM Who I AM.

' ... ... the words that I speak unto you,
they are spirit, and they are life.'
(John 6:63b)

A certain scholar (Davidson) from the UK suggested ’eh-yeh ’ă-šer ’eh-yeh which we translate to I AM That I AM or I AM Who I AM , is more properly, 'I Am wont to be that which I will be'
My paraphrase would be similar: 'I am Who I will reveal Myself to be'

Look at some of what Jesus spoke:

28As Jesus taught in the Temple, He said in a loud voice, “Do you really know Me and know where I am from? I have not come on my own authority. He who sent Me, however, is truthful. You do not know Him, but I know Him, because I come from Him and He sent Me.”
John 7:28-29

... “You know neither me nor My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”
John 8:19

Jesus answered, “You belong to this world here below, but I come from above. You are from this world, but I am not from this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. And you will die in your sins if you do not believe that ‘I Am Who I Am’.”
John 8:23-24

“Who are you?” they asked Him.

Jesus answered, “What I have told you from the very beginning. I have much to say about you, much to condemn you for. The One who sent Me, however, is truthful, and I tell the world only what I have heard from Him.”

They did not understand that Jesus was talking to them about the Father. So He said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, you will know that ‘I Am Who I Am’ ; then you will know that I do nothing on My own authority, but I say only what the Father has instructed Me to say. And He Who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”

Many who heard Jesus say these things believed in Him.

John 8:25-30

He sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Pslam 107:20

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path
Psalm 119:105

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 8:12

Bless you ....><>

Do not believe Me, then, if I am not doing the things My Father wants Me to do. But if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, you should at least believe My deeds, in order that you may know once and for all that the Father is in Me and that I am in the Father.”
John 10:37-38

Thank you Br. Bear,

When reading this at one point I was aware of the ladder reaching from earth to heaven, and the words,' I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.'(John 14:6). The Lord Jesus Christ making manifest the Father of glory, and the Holy Spirit making the Lord Jesus Christ manifest to us. An upward passage leading to God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
1Timothy 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jonh 3:16

Hello @Born Again 2004,

Yes, I woke up with that thought one morning this week. Looking it up now, I see that it is from 1 Corinthians:-

' For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face:
now I know in part;
but then shall I know
even as also I am known.

(1 Cor 13:12)

We are known of God, in Christ Jesus, now. One day we shall know even as we are known, Wonderful!!

'Neither pray I for these alone,
but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word;
That they all may be one;
as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee,
that they also may be one in Us:
that the world may believe
that Thou hast sent Me.'
(Joh 17:20)

Thank you
In Christ Jesus

Saviour, Lord and Head.

Yea , what all of that scripture tells me is that God will perfect us someday soon after we die our physical death, but until then, we will only know Him in part.

None of us know Him or anything about Him completely...not as much as we migjt think we do, not until then!

Yes, @Born Again 2004,

You are right. We will know Him following our resurrection: for when we see Him, we will be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

'As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness:
I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.'
(Psa 17:15)

'Beloved, now are we the sons of God,
and it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
but we know that,
when He shall appear,
we shall be like Him;
for we shall see Him as He is.'

'For I know that my Redeemer liveth,
and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
And though after my skin worms destroy this body,
yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Whom I shall see for myself,
and mine eyes shall behold,
and not another;
though my reins be consumed within me.'
