Weightlifting

chad,

can you please reccomend me the best sort of excercising/weights/food to eat to get into really good shape!! im happy with the way i am, not fat not skinny i just wanna tone up a bit!! any suggestions?

Hi Craig,

This is what I do:

1. Excercise daily (one or two days off).
- stretch
- weightlifting
- cardio (jogging, running, steps, etc)

2. Eat healthy, natural organic food. Lots of greens.
- low carbs (stay away from high fructose corn syrup and white bread)
- low fat (stay away from those 'premium' ice creams and junk food / snacks
- plenty of salads
- low sodium
- no sodas

3. Praise GOD for the day you made through and the next day :)

so when you say no soda....i drink a bit of diet coke....is that bad for you too?

i stay away from stuff like chocolates, lollies, processed food like potatoe chips etc....but i like my diet coke!!! i dont drink it coz it diet i drink it coz i like it!!

Soda has high fructose corn syrup in it and some other junk that you do not need.

All soda is garbage as far as I'm concerned. Stick with water or fruit drinks

Shame on me for forgetting to mention that :) LOL

Thanks for bringing that up Soldier.

I am just getting into weightlifting... for women [edited by Yeshua no LINKS are to be posted without Chad's permission] is a great website (forum). I use the treadmill mostly for my aerobics. I cut back on the carbs (amazing results). No soda. A lot of the things Chad mentioned. I take fish oil/flaxseed pills, multi vitamins, calcium supplement and some other things. [edited by Yeshua no LINKS are to be posted without Chad's permission] is a great website for vitiamins... Still you should be careful with herbs and such.

Mostly I am just trying to tone my muscles at this point because I sit all day in the office. I have been working out most of the week for about a year now. One day I hope to be all toned up and start shaping/sculpting and building more strength.

I don't go to the gym. I have a treadmill and other equipment at home but mostly I use hand weights, barbell and my body weight. I use videos and sometimes not... I have gotten some good info. online and such.

Does anyone know what is the best method? I heard different for all ... is the pyramid the best for lifting weights or what?

I love weightlifting and doing cardio workout. I've been working out for 6 years now and nothing beats it! It relieves your stress, betters your self esteem and makes you feel completely energized I have fairly a lot of experience in this considering I never "studied" or a qualified trainer but 6 years experience pays off well.

If you have any questions about pills, exercises, or health issues ask me! I'll be glad to help.

(the weights need to be greater than a fork or a can)

hey chad good post i love to workout myself i've been doing it for several years now and i absolutely agree it just makes you feel so good plus after the lifting things just get lighter life becomes physically easier this week i'm finally joining a gym for the first time i'm excited i've been there a few times already and the one thing about that i like is that when i see the other people working out it challenges me in my mind the competitiveness makes me work harder. i recently purchased the iron gym it's for pull ups and push ups and you hang it from your doorway that was a very good investment well anyway ive got a question for you like i said i've worked out for a long time i also do cardio but i can't ever seem to lose my gut any suggestions? well thanks for the post Godbless.

well for me...

eat anything you want if its in the safe/like zones and always eat/drink in small amounts! and ofcourse always ask God to help you keep in shape.

Craig, diet cokes are actually fattening even if they call it "diet".. as Chat said, sodas and all that aren't good... they affect your teeth as well.
.... drink water!! even at parties if possible :D

I don't really have a regular exercise pattern like before but doing tummy crunches is good.

This should help women... doing housework is a great way to get in shape!.. so start cleanin sinks and stoves and cmputer screens... etc.

easy peasy lemon squeezy!

God Bless you

Geeezzzz...my idea of weight lifting is putting books back on the shelf . Maybe I should move from paperbacks to the reference books. I once took this bible study called "First Place." It gave a lot of really good support for exercise and food intake control. You would meet weekly for bible study and go over scriptures for the week. During exercise they would give you a scripture to mediate on. It was really good..measured body weight, water intake and gave you people to help support you. It was an awesome way to praise the Lord. I'm 25, there were women there from all ages though. There was even a beautiful sister in Christ who brought her 73 year old mother..awesomeness.....

What are your thoughts on high reps/low wieght vs. low reps/heavy wieght? I have read some about the slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers which serve slightly different purposes. While I have heard low reps/heavy wieght will build up the muscles faster (and I agree with this) I want to incoorperate high reps/low wieght into my routine. I want more functional muscles that have strength as well as endurance(I occasionally do manual labor).

I have been working out for about 6 months continously and it seems to me the ideal routine for me would be lifting heavy twice a week on back to back days splitting up upper and lower body, taking a day off then doing the same thing with low wieght. But I have also heard that lifting wieghts 4days a week should only be done by someone who has been lifting for a while. I feel I have a fairly good base built up although I still need to work on my form some. Thoughts????

High reps / lower weights = building tone and burning fat
Lower reps / higher weights = build mass

It never hurts to do both, mixed up in cycles. One month do one, the next month do the other method. Rest minimum 1 or 2 days a week. Cardio is excellent for your heart, endurance and fat burning as well.

Remember, if you eat garbage you will look like it too ;)

I like the idea of lifting heavy and light once each week so I am building strength and endurance at the same time. For example I am in the military so I have to do a PT test once a year that includes push ups. I have noticed that when I just do bench presses with heavy wieght/low reps I get stronger but if I try to do some push ups just to see where I'm at I struggle past 20 reps which is low for me. Likewise if I just focus on push ups my absolute strenght (for the bench press) will suffer. I want to try and get the best of both worlds so to speak:wink:. Thank you for your input!

Hey chad, well I love working out, but i've always had a hard time with the muscle part of it. For example, i try to run as often as I can, but I can barely do a push up. lol. I can't even do a pull-up....so with that being said... how would you recommend i build a lil strength? (keeping in mind i'm a girl and dont wanna look super buff or anything. hehe)

NewC...a lot of ways to build up strength.

My list, generally in order from most important and down:

1. Diet. - you must eat healthy, and try to go all organic.
2. Sleep - 7 - 8 hours is plenty, oversleep and undersleeping will rob you of your energy
3. Stay Active - walk, run, job, swim, etc. Just be active. Don't let the TV rule your time ;)

For a woman, I say do some light weightlifting. Don't worry about getting buffed. Just go for light weights, high rep. Protein is important too for muscle recovery and energy. Clean carbs (brown rice, oatmeal) is healthy in moderation.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8-10 cups a day. Stay away from "alternatives" and "artificial" garbage as well.

I love bike riding for exercise. My wife and I just started a couple of months ago and now that spring in here we are really getting into it. We have been carpooling to work and then splitting the commute on our bikes back home. We typically ride between 10-15 miles a day. It is great exercise and is so much fun. We are actually going on a 200 mile bike trip on the Katy trail in Missouri this weekend. I am so looking forward to it!
