Well...I think that it is using God's name in vain personally. I use to do that all the time before, it's something that we pick up, I don't know how.

If you do say it on accident, then excuse yourself or just tell God in your heart. You can substitute that with "Oh my goodness."

lol...I know it's a bit silly, but it helped me! Don't feel bad about it brother! It's good that you are asking and that you want to know. I'm not too sure what others have to say about this matter though!

Many Blessings,

This is something I feel really strongly about. I believe it is wrong to say "Oh my --d. I can't even type it, I feel so guilty. I think it all comes down to how much we revere the name of God. Is God just an exclaimation to us? Or is He the all-knowing, all-consuming, amazing, gracious, sustainer of life as we know it? God deserves reverence. We should stand in awe of His mighty power.

The Jews of the old testiment wouldn't even SAY Gods name, because they revered it so much. And we just throw it out as an exclaimation.

I know we will find the arguement that the word God isn't really His name or whatever, but that's not the point. It's what we call Him, and we should respect that. And as for substitutes.....why do we need to exclaim anything at all? The Bible says "Be slow to speak." Lets keep our mouths shut when we want to exclaim something, and we won't run into the problem.

I think it differs in what sense you say it in. If you say oh my .... then I agree with the last post, I believe that is blasphemy. Ray comfort put it like this - Hitlers name wasn't even despised enough to be used as a cuss word, but you're taking Gods pure and holy name and using it as an insult or swear word.

However I also believe that if you say it in the sense, example 'oh, my God, you are so great' staring in marvel at something you find truly spectacular then thats OK. I think it can be used in praise or blasphemy, its a thin line, and I think the best way to avoid stepping over the wrong side of the line is to just not say it at all.

God bless

I think God answer my prayer because I’ve been say Oh My --D< you know what to many times for the past weeks because I was doing jokes on it but I never knew it was Taking God in Vain. But God is really showing me here and I have prayed for the past maybe 1 mouth or a mouth and I was asking God what ever I sin or not or even if I sin without knowing that I do not knowing if I sin or not but I ask for correction and I got a nice correction, but he did answered my prayer.. I guest this is my new testimony!

I am still messing up because today I try to remind myself but when I Laughed I said Oh My --D <<< by mistake:embarasse

Heh, tell me brother - who isn't still messing up?

Just persevere, keep at it, practice makes perfect as they say. Breaking a bad habit can be very strenuous, but never give in to the devil. Chin up!

Well I am trying and it is kind a hard to remember what not to say and I got to feel bad for other the Christian who has bad cussing word problems because I knoe they did not mean to cuss because now I understand why they try to not cuss but they do it when they just slip out and I wrote a paper to be a a good reminder but its not easy at all and now Im getting temptations and I hear this stuff in my head a few times and it is kind of annyoing

I think anytime your saying God without praying or something, then its in vein. I'm a victim to "oh my God" a lot, too. Just gotta work on it.

For one thing, if you feel umcomfortable saying, don't say it. Could certainly be the Holy Spirit trying to convict you to stop. GOD will surely help you stop as well if you have a habit of saying that phrase, so pray on that.

On another hand, as Ghooost said it depends on what sense you use it. Say for example I just witnessed a car explosion before my eyes and I say it out of shock, I sincerely doubt that is in vain. On the other hand, if you say it so often in casual conversation (such as if your friend just told you something silly, like a joke) that could as well be in vain.

Let' take a look at what it means in "vain" anyway:

Vain

adj., vain·er, vain·est.
  1. Not yielding the desired outcome; fruitless: a vain attempt.
  2. Lacking substance or worth: vain talk.
  3. Excessively proud of one's appearance or accomplishments; conceited.
  4. Archaic. Foolish.
idiom:in vain
  1. To no avail; without success: Our labor was in vain.
  2. In an irreverent or disrespectful manner: took the Lord's name in vain.

Ya know, we all sin, and I know we all probably slip and say this every once in a while. Good thing is, we don't have to be scared. God knows we are nearly human and we will slip. Now, this doesn't give us license to just do whatever the heck we want and say whatever the heck we want. We should still try and walk in the way he would, but if we do slip up, and we WILL, God forgives.

Stylez, the most important thing is that you feel convicted and that you want to change...that is the first step! Then pray to the Lord, ask Him to help you stop.

You may not stop saying that expression immediately since it was something you used to say often. But remember, God knows your heart. He knows your intentions Brother.

Do not beat yourself up about this! May God bless you for wanting to change this!

ok what should i do i was doing this like 3 or 4 times today and i did by mistake.. But saying oh my goodness is not wrong because im must have said being im must say myself a goodness because goodness means The state or quality of being good.

Definately a good idea to cut it all out. It's like me for example, I have had trouble controling my thoughts from time to time. Something really messed will pop in, but the thing is, you need to be genuinly repentant. Really sorry, and fight not to do it again. For me the thoughts have come a lot fewer and farther in between, because it's a constant battle, and I am on guard.

When it comes to God's name we should treat it with care. We need to be Holy and seperate from the world. To the world, God's name is nothing but mud.

Something I just thought about, notice people don't say "Oh my Allah?" It's because it isn't offensive to God. The world will always do that which is offensive to God. Satan worshippers could care less if you mention Muhammed, or Buddah, but say the name of Jesus, and they go nuts. Just sort of a re-affirmation that with all the religions to choose from, we are the ones believing in the one, true God.

Okay, I remember hearing Christian and one time I heard my Co Pastor said it but my pastor I don’t believed I ever hear him saying it and right now I don't think my co pastor knows if it is wrong or not so I am not that sure at all.. But really I said it like 3 or 4 times today and that when I forget and try not to and it is so hard and stress for me and I member the devil try to keep tempting me and it much more annoying and I guest satan is much madder because now I found new correction and now I don’t have to sin as much as before which is better then keep sinning without knowing if I am or not and it is my habit also and I notices that and also and I do it a few time when I laugh but that’s how my mind works and I am trying to changes my mind from laugh to what ever said but comes out so quick that you know; but if somebody being silly and funny I laugh easily and that’s when I said that Oh My --D< You know what I mean and its funny because the devil playing with my mind so much that I can‘t be sure if I am saying Oh My --D and that is something new I experience today and that is not fun for me. But I almost did said god but I did said goodness because it come out of my mouth so quick and that’s how I mess up and that dose kills me, And I am scared of that happening of being more and more and I am right and it might happen to tomorrow and I am worry about that too it does make you think, if this stuff ever going to go away I mean I did ask God to forgive me and I repented in school and one teacher said I was not to post to pray but thank the Lord that I able to finish praying because you know I can’t deal with this stuff anymore and know I got more issues now!!!! BUT PLEASE KEEP ME IN YOUR PRAYERS!!!! God Bless, Love you ! Thanks for helping me and supporting and the help because this forum is a blessing

It WILL go away. You need to be patient. Not that I mean go ahead and sin, but when you do, let it add to your resolve to stop sinning. You know, we will never be totally free from all sin, but it doesn't mean we can't try.

You are going to find, as you grow in Christ, you will find more and more things you need to change. That's how God works. He changes you, and slowly makes you new. Once you have dealt with blasphemy, he might get you thinking about how you speak in general. Who knows? I don't know you so I don't know your struggles, but I know God will change you. You just have strive for Holiness, and listen to His Spirit, and heed the call. You will grow in Holiness your whole life.

I heard a man say once, "The more holy I become, the more I hate the unholiness that remains in me." This is a lifelong journey. Several years later you will look back and think, "Wow I can't believe I used to take God's name in vain!"

Praise God for His saving Grace.
