well, they always find ways to counter attack, but then it'll be safe not to use, because when it becomes a habit, there will be a greater chance you'll say it in a bad situation and they'll mis interpret you...

Well I ask my co Pastor and she said that because when I say God name in vain I am talking to God when it dose make no sinec at all...:embarasse

I've often wondered that too... In a way I feel it is ...But in a way I feel it's a call out...I guess it's how you use it...

"Oh My God!": Is that vain?

The ancient Hebrews had a rule that no one except the high priest could utter the name of God (YAHWEH) and the high priest could only speak that name once a year - when he entered the Holy of Holies in the temple on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of the people.

When I read that, I was shocked into realizing that I had been fooling myself into believing that I'd been giving God's name great respect just because I'd stopped cursing.

I need to change how I meditate on God. I spend too much energy worshipping God as my friend and benefactor and far too little time meditating on his glory and majesty. God's name should not be thrown about casually.

"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all." (1 Chr 29:11)

I believed is the way we use it..

Yes, our GOD has got the name which is above every name(Philippians 2:9). I think it is the best thing, but therefore we have the responsibility to care about his name with all of our power.
I need also mediate on his glory and majesty more.

I used to say this myself and i then i felt uncomfortable saying it. So i stopped saying it, but when others say it i feel really uncomfortable.

When you use the expression, "Oh my God!", I don't think your using God's Name in vain. It is an expression of shock that comes out from our emotions.

Using God's name in vain will come under these acts:

1) Mocking God's name.
2) Blasphemy.

Please see this thread so that you will have an idea:

http://www.talkjesus.com/arts-books-movies-music/15718-should-christians-support-blasphemy.html

God bless you.

According to Easton's Bible Dictionary, blasphemy can include any abuse of the name of God. The ancient Israelites held God's name YHWH in such high esteem that it was spoken aloud only once a year and then only by the High Priest as he entered the Holy of Holies at the temple on the Day of Atonement.

Many Christians today (myself included) hold that the casual use of God's name in any way and for any reason constitutes abuse and, therefore, is a sin.

Dear Brother SLE,

If you don't mind, let me remind you that we are living under the new covenant of Grace. So let us not mix up the old covenant with the new one.

God sees our heart, our intentions and judges us accordingly. I don't think that when we say, "Oh my God!", we are using it casually. We utter the words generally out of shock (unable to bear the pain in our emotions). But when there is a casual use of God's Name, in many cases we can definetly make it out. When ever there is a casual use of God's Name, that person definetly has the intentions of mocking God.

Please see this thread (it is about how people used God's Name casually and mocked Him):

God bless you.

I am under the impression that uttering God's name in any type of vanity is sinful. That being said, I am interested in a technical point. Sometimes I say ( edited by LLJ) and some have said that is simply short for "Jesus" and is therefore taking his name in vain. I think this is ridiculous because it could be anything like "gosh" or "darnit"

I also feel people are mocking our God when they say "cheese and rice" as an exclamatory.

Your best bet is to pick other up on it.
when your friends say Oh my(edited by LLJ) then say 'i think you mean gosh' it worked for me.
i am always picking my friends up on it because i hate people using it so when they say it i reply with 'gosh' and after a while you start saying gosh instead of oh (edited by LLJ).
give it a try!

What you are doing is good, but I hope that you are telling your friends the "why" of what you are doing; that you believe God's name deserves utmost respect and should never be used casually.
