where does the suffering come from?

and just how much of a choice did you have in your conception/birth??
I don't remember but I have some clues.
Like when I play a video game and beat it I will increase the difficulty until it's impossible to beat and then I will spend the next three months getting slaughtered until I finally beat it or give up.If I give up I will try it again after 1 or 2 years.
If I were to have a choice in life I suspect I would not have chosen an easy path.My enemy is my teacher,he is busy making me perfect.

I long ago realised that i would never understand why there was such suffering and evil in this world if the God i believe in is a God of justice, compassion and mercy,

The apostle Paul explained this for us 2000 years ago:

"Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror, then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am known." (1 Cor 13:12)

....... still doesn't make it any easier when i see millions starving in East Africa, or tens of thousands being killed or maimed in wars, or the devestation of the Tsunami's in Indonesia and Japan,......... but personally i just have to try to let it go, do all i can to alleviate the pain and suffering i see all around this world and put my faith in God,....... but God knows how hard that is to do.

the hindu religion says karma is the reason that one is born into adverse conditions. given that christianity believes neither in karma nor in rebirth, how does one justify someone being born into abject poverty, with physical deformities, etc? is this also what god intended, and is there any justification behind this as mentioned in the bible?

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”
“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.

It is good that your heart aches for the poor. I pray that ache drives you to stay involved in relieving the suffering around you.
