Case #1 For Tongue Speakers

First, I would say that she did not ask God, she asked the medium. And the medium is obviously open to all sorts of unknown spiritual influences.

Second, I would say that we do not get to control what types of spiritul gift we are belssed with. Spiritual gifts are exactly that, gifts from God. He chooses what we get, and we recieve.

Third, I would say that her interest and desire for the gift of tongues is greater than her love for God. She needs to let God know her wish in her prayers, then let God handle it. She needs to trust God to do what is best for her.

And fourth, I would ask her why she so badly wants to speak in tongues? Does she know that it is best to be used just between her and God? Is she trying to prove something? And talk about that.

Scripture I would give her is:

1. Isaiah 8:19-22 and Isaiah 9:1-7 to illustrate the consequences of calling upon the "ghosts and familiar spirits that chirp and mutter", and a much better way.

2. Corinthians 14:1-25, especially verse 22 - "Tongues then are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but believers."

Can't think of any other scripture at this pointin time.

Now I am going to read all the other posts, and see how I did.

Excellent points made sister. I agree with your 4 points entirely, didn't think of the 4th one myself.

When asking GOD for something (yes, Jesus says we do not have because we do not ask), its always nice, respectful towards GOD [and humble] to end the prayer or request with "your will be done" attitude. After all, GOD will give us what we ask for if He sees fit and ok. If He does not give us what we ask for, say amen too!

Awesome reply dchena. In #30 I gave a possible answer to you fourth point, I have seen it so many times with the charismatic non-denominational movement. Some of those services have even scared me. I would laugh if it were not so serious. The whole idea of Christianity is becoming so twisted we really have to watch our backs so much now, I'm glad Jesus is my co-pilot in life.

God Bless you and be well in the Spirit of the Lord

wow, this just keeps going. lol

First a medium works the occult, there is no heavenly works performed by any worker of the occult, that is a period. Gracealone, Trishann and Coconut awesome. I did notice 2 areas vacant though. In 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 does deal specifically with Spiritual Gifts and it is as diverse as there are people and 1 Corinthians 14:1-25 on confusion caused by yes, tongues.

Christianity and having the Spirit is about you and your commitment to Jesus and accepting the Spirit. If your heart is washed clean by the blood of Christ and filled with the Spirit your life is very different, your mood, the way you think is different. Tongues does not a Christian make, it is but one of many many gifts. The charismatic non-denominational movement, which includes the evangelicals has made tongues the focus and verifiable proof of the Spirit which scare anyone.

Sorry if this is unduly harsh.

The only folks I have met with that doctrine were some Pentecostal friends.

I felt the Holy Spirit leading me to invite a young mother and her son to my church. This young lady, Danielle, is not going to church anywhere, although she professes to be a Christian and helps her mother run a Christian thriftshop.

Danielle was interested (24 years old), but her mother, (Beth) told her not to come to our Baptist church because we don't speak in tongues.

First of all, how does she know whether we speak in tongues? Some of us do, we just speak softly or in our spirit! Second of all, speaking in tongues is not evidence of being "baptized by the spirit". Tongues is one of the gifts, the least of the gifts.

Beth is so proud of speaking in tongues that she believes other churches are inferior to hers.

Her daughter will not attend church with her, but she would rather that Danielle sit alone in the trailer than go to a Baptist church that does not speak outwardly in tongues.

True case: A 24 year old woman not being fed and not in church because of the grandmother's belief in the importance of tongues.

Note: Danielle does not drive, so she has no way to go worship unless she rides with someone else...like a church van or a friend picking her up.

It used to seem strange to me that almost every church is proud of something and in that pride looks down on others; I have seen this in many , many different places and denominations. Even the non denominalss are proud of their non denominalism. We are supposed to build up each other in love are we not.
Then I began to realize it was simply the flesh of man. Not loving your brothers and accepting them where they in their walks is a sure sign of spiritual immaturity. That makes the finger pointers and superior attitudes signs of being a baby in Christ. Wherever you find babies you will find a lot of stinking mess (things that need changing) and a lot of crying.

The Holy Spirit of God deemed it necessary for us to have 9 fruits of the Spirit and 9 gifts of the Spirit. They should not be ignored nor feared.
Moving in the gifts is a good and necessary thing and yet they make no one superior for the power is from God and He alone deserves the glory.

I love the gifts it is true but give me a heart that produces the fruit of the Spirit and I will show you spiritual maturity.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Mark 16:16-20 "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen."

I wanted to share how I received the gift of speaking in tongues. I never asked for it. I did, however, go after God. I wanted more and more of Him. I still do! I started to speak little phrases at home...in the shower, by the bed, etc. Until one Sunday morning, I couldn't let it in anymore and I just about ran to the altar at church. I knelt and the words just flowed from my lips. I don't know what I said, but that isn't the point. I'm not an interpreter of tongues...well I don't think so. It was an amazing experience.

I know that churches might think they are better than others, etc, but really God knows what is going on. We are to build each other up...edify the brethren. We can't do that if we are so worried about them speaking in tongues.

The only thing that my pastor says is that we shouldn't be afraid of what we should be full of...meaning the Holy Spirit. The Power of God in us. That is another thing that is missing. Power. We have the Victor and Conquerer on our side. We aren't weak.

Now, I don't know much about speaking in tongues...though I do it. I know what has happened to me and that is about it. I know that asking a medium for it, isn't the brightest idea. God will give you what He wills. In His time. This seems to me to be reaching for God's hand rather than His face. I personally, would rather see His face.

Dreamer, Boanerges, Giggles4God: Thank you all 3 of you, there is so much testimony here and truly inspiring purhaps Enow can print some of it, for his friend.

God bless you all

"For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit." (1 Cor 14:2 NIV)
