Christian Rock? Confused!!

Christian Rock? Confused!

Rock & Roll in its origin was not supposed to be morally good. I remember hearing long ago that the so-called "Father of Rock & Roll", a Cleveland, Ohio disc hockey named Allen Reed, gave that style of music its name and that "rock & roll" was a street gang term for the method used in assaulting and robbing drunks.

just thought i throw in my 2 pence; the organ was originally a pub instrument and someone brought it into a church as a tool for worship and as you know it became difficult to get out of the church. lol

Unfortunately there will always be those religious folk who believe that the only real Christian music is sung in the form of hymns (or perhaps a revival song sung by the choir, if you're feeling really wild!), just as there are those who believe the King James Version is the only version you should ever read. There is nothing wrong with having such preferences, but it is sad to see all the "Christians" who condemn others for not falling into their line.

There is supposed to be freedom in Christ, and as long as we are working within the same parameters, put a smile on your face & rejoice! This music you condemn might be the only thing reaching out to the world's youth! Praise God for it.

Christian Rock!

I like and listen to Christian Contemporary music! I don't know if there is a difference between Christian contemporary and rock.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me!

I would seriously love to hear the songs David sang. We see his heart in the words we read from the Psalms, but to truley hear his music would be interesting. I guarentee you all of them were not in hymn form

*waves*

It grieves me to think that the music I love the most isn't exceptable worship to God! :-S And then I think...okay let's just give satan everything then...he has just about everything else that God created...and he has twisted!

(I am being sarcastic!)

I will NOT stand by and allow satan to take what he doesn't own! God help us if we allow it ever!

2 Samuel 6:5 says "And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals."

That doesn't sound like organs to me. Yes, harps, cornets, cymbals. I'm sure there were drums.

I am so glad God see into the heart of matters and not on the surface. He can see into things we can not.

It is sad that people dismiss things because they aren't their style. Listen to them. Listen to the songs. I am going to see if I can find Steven Curtis Chapman's song Magnificent Obsession. I think I spelled it right lol. I'll place it in the streaming media section. Go listen to it.

Listen to them. Listen to the songs.
That's pretty much what it comes down to. The lyrics are why I listen. The music behind it is the passion. Even if one doesn't like the sound, they could at least admire the passion & be glad that there are Christians out there with that kind of passion!

On the question of Christians embedding themselves within the secular market...

My favourite Christian album of all time wasn't even marketed as a Christian recording. 'Lenny Kravitz' debut release 'Let Love Rule'. That albums had songs about life, Lenny' life, and it is plainly evident that Jesus was a huge part of his life when he wrote that album. Yes, it has phrases to make your pastor blush and a few tunes with no reference to God but that album was undeniably (IMHO) a hallmark Christian recording. It is guttural, raunchy, beautiful and sincere.

I heard that album at a moment of deep despair and it gave me hope. At that time in my life I was utterly and fundamentally opposed to the biblical message. I was angry at God, at Christians and living in complete fear of (the concept of) heaven and hell.

I Build This Graden (Lenny Kravitz)

" In this garden
They'll be no war
No racial prejudice
You'll be my brother
Of any color
You'll just be okay with us
We'll love each day in peace
In hope that we will one day reach
The rest of the world
When they are ready to be teached
The kingdom will come
Thy will be done
On Earth as it is in heaven"

Believe (Lenny Kravitz)

"The Son of God is in your face
Offering us eternal grace
If you want it you've got to believe
'Cause being free is a state of mind
We'll one day leave this all behind
Just put your faith in God
And one day you'll see it"

Message recieved, thankyou Lenny.

There are many christian band that are rock based: Kutless, Switchfoot, Hillsong United, ect. We are meant to use all music to worship God, not just hymns. There are even refrences in scripure to using various instruments and styles of music when worshipping God.
Psalms 33:3-"Sing unto Him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise."
Is there a better way to be loud and crazy for Him than with rock music, I have seen how crazy people get a rock shows, and wouldn't be so buch better that this craziness was for God, instead of other things.
Psalms 150- 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
This psalm even says to use instruments of all kinds to worship God, some may choose the organ or piano, but others feel more comfortable with an electric guitar of bass, or behind a drum set. Music itself was created by God to give glory to Him, it doesn't matter what genre, even if it is used by satan more often than not, we have a right as christian to take it back for God.

well said

I think I agree with you. I'm one who loves hymns AND Christian rock.
I think what you said where we're taking it back for God sums it up nicely.

Well, rock is my favourite genre and I am a christian. So, what type of music must I listen? Hmmn, I wonder...oooh oooh, i got it...I should listen Christian Rock!!!!
There is nothing wrong with christian rock. Some people like rock and/or they are christians.

Christian Rock did not evolve out of drugs, it's the other way around. Consider this: The Passion of the Christ as well as other adaptations are a good way to show the story of Jesus and to allow people to connect with the message, but you wouldn't take your little child to see The Passion for obvious reasons in showing the true horrifying nature of the situation that was at hand. There are other adaptations in cartoon form and still more that children can understand. Just the same, you wouldn't let children listen to some of the harder Christian rock because of subject matter that little children would not comprehend. But still there are forms of Christian rock that can be understood and appreciated by believers of any age.

I did the same in giving up secular music when I became a true believer. I used to listen to the same kind of thrash metal, and hard rock. But when I became a believer, it was not a bargain with God scenario. For me, I didn't have the thought of questioning God to show himself. I gave up secular music as a result of the Holy Spirits work in my life. As time went on, I would be listening to some Praise and Worship, and when I found an old CD I would toss it without thinking twice. But when I was younger, you wouldn't be able to pry a rock album out of my hands. The scenario is quite comical when I think about it, but it's salvation through Jesus that led me to give it up so easily. Of course, nowadays I listen to bands like Kutless, Underoath, and Disciple. Back to rock, but only to praise the one who gave me life.

Third Day did one of the best praise albums I've heard, and also a fantastic Xmas songs album - songs I thought I never wanted to hear again came to life. I'm more into ambient dance but thats another story...

Not all Christian music is edifying. Some of it is annoying and repetitious (not in a good way). Some of it is a wonderful way to glorify God- which is what it should be for.

Not all people who say they are Christian really are. It does us good to research and not just throw our lot in with anyone who says they are Christian.

Miley Cyrus tells people that she is a Christian. I dunno, but would Jesus approve of her putting her image on sandwich bags while claiming to love Him? None of her songs are Christian either. I know she is not the same as a Christian band; i'm just saying. Gotta watch out for the wolves in sheep's clothing.
