Is it sinful and vain for women to wear makeup?

Could men put on makeup and want to make themselves look better too. If asome are sayin makeup is ok for ladies, why not for men too?

Are the rules the same for men nd if not why not?

It is part of the tradition for both men and women when they are young and wanting to 'catch' a girl or a boy friend to put their 'best foot' forward rather than what they really are. Probably this is a cause for many divorces and separations. Neither one of them really knew what it was they were getting until they began to relax and let the truth of themselves be seen by their mate.

This 'tradition' is practiced regularly by both sexes and encouraged by the parents. This is, if you will, "makeup"!

Makeup was obviously around in bible times cos jezebel wore it.

Are there any verses in the OT or NT that say it is ok or good to wear makeup.

I can't find any atll

Are there any scriptures that say its ok, or good to play football, or drive a car?
Because there is no specific scripture saying a specific item is "good", or :ok" means nothing.

There is no prohibition against a women wearing makeup in the NT.

If it is a sin for someone, let it be a sin to them...that does not mean it's a sin to everyone else.
It is not which is on the outside of a person that defiles them..it is what is inside...a heart condition.

Perhaps the women in all congregations should spend more time dealing with the ongoing gossip that is ever present in the Church, instead of worrying about lip gloss.

Thankfully Christ looks at the inside of a person, it would be troubling indeed if we were judged instead by our Christian brothers, and sisters...who seemed more concerned with the outer appearance.

Perhaps instead of wallowing in skim milk, one would spend the time studying the aseity of God, or contemplating the Kalam Cosmological Argument, one would be eating meat..rather than dwelling on something that does not in any way hinder ones salvation.

Please don't be so rude Barabbas. I ask a simple question to add to the discussion and you nmake loud angry suggestions.

Why not answer peacefully and in discussion rather than judgemental

This is a intresing thread. A study. No stone casting.

Nor I sister. But... do we need a black and white statement to go ahead against or to go ahead for? God looks at the heart of a person and knows the person's purpose for doing or for not doing something. Remember the Pharisees prayed long in public to impress people around them. They received the reward they sought: the glory of men. Yet Jesus is certainly not against prayer for He explained carefully the kind of praying we should do. Similarly on the question of make-up a person should listen carefully to what the Holy Spirit says to his heart. Of one thing, I believe we can be certain: It is never wrong to please God. All of us grew up wanting to please people. That in itself is not an evil thing, but it can become one if we only want to please them in order to get something for ourselves out of them, such as money or position. How do we please God? Does it please God to wear make-up? Consider what Adam and Eve did after they had eaten of the forbidden tree. They attempted to cover themselves because all of a sudden they were ashamed of their nakedness. They were wrong in their first effort after their first mistake of eating the wrong thing. God provided them a better covering, better because it came from Him. When we make decisions which affect our walk with God it seems to me that the best place to get the right answer is from God Himself. Why would using make-up please God? I am purposely not answering the question because only God can answer the question for each person. I do not believe there is only one answer which is the answer for everyone.

There is no commandment that says 'thou shalt not wear make-up'

There are guidelines for a womans apparel in the New Testament, that don't specifically mention make-up but modesty etc

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array
1 Timothy 2:9

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
1 Peter 3:3

We don't need make-up to be accepted by Jesus. He loves us just the way we are!!!

Thx for the last coue of posts. Giving a less hostile answer makes so much difference.

I was shocked the other day seeing a high school out at lunch time buying lunch. The girls were so heavily madeup that it looked wronbg.Even for those who angrily state makeup is fine on this thread surely you agree there must be some boundaries toi teach our children dAughters.

Do w ewant our Christian daughets doing this or do we teach modesty?

Teach a child in the way YOU would have him/her go, and when they grow older they shall not depart from it. And because of this, you play a part in thier judgement.

For freedom Christ set us free. Do not use your freedom for as a cloak to cover up your own failures, weaknesses, and sins while exposing the failures of others. In other words, don`t hog the cloak of righteousness to yourself under the pretense of others being less worthy because of their appearance. The cloak of righteousness belongs to Christ, indeed this cloak IS Christ...and its really really really effective at covering up your muddy face..and every other muddy part of you...and my mud as well.

This "study" of what Christ wants amounts to nothing more than an attempt to find righteousness in the mirror...or the closet...or a drawer....or a medicine cabinet...or a purse....its like Christ is standing outside the door ...and you are scrambling to clean your rags so you will look good to Him...like He cant see past your facade.

We will all do better to teach the daughters of Christ to 'judge' with right judgement, which is look closely at the heart of others - its intents and desires - instead of looking to see how clean their face is. You greatly err, not understanding the righteousness of Christ, when you go about trying to establish [with discussions such as this one] your own righteousness with your carnal 'touch not make-up, taste not lip gloss, handle not a brush with color on it'. Make-up - plastered on an inch thick...or a white washed face... neither has NOTHING to do with the righteousness of Christ. JESUS SAID "men look on the outward appearance, I look at the appearance of the heart."

Do you really want to be "Christ-like" . Then start listening to Him, instead of to listening to the cries of pride that disguises itself as the humble voice of piety.

2 Corinthians 11:3 "I fear that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds may be seduced from a complete and pure devotion to Christ."

The modern church has, perhaps unintentionally, promoted the idea that dressing up for church honors God. Nothing could be further from the truth. It came from pagan beliefs that the gods have to be flattered, appeased to gain favor with them.

"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"
