Here's a paragraph from Wikipedia that I found on this subject that is making me NOT listen to/follow Joyce Meyer, and Joel Osteeen:

Prosperity theology (sometimes referred to as the prosperity gospel, the health and wealth gospel, or the gospel of success)[A] is a Christian religious doctrine that financial blessing is the will of God for Christians, and that faith, positive speech, and donations to Christian ministries will increase one's material wealth. Based on non-traditional interpretations of the Bible, often with emphasis on the Book of Malachi, the doctrine views the Bible as a contract between God and humans: if humans have faith in God, he will deliver his promises of security and prosperity. Confessing these promises to be true is perceived as an act of faith, which God will honor.

What it's saying to ME is that say you donate $100 to a ministry, you'll get $100 worth of blessings. And that we have to ALWAYS be happy. But, we don't have to always be happy. We are human beings, and have 1,000,000 emotions. So, be as emotional as you want. Yes, God wants us to be happy. But He'll help us have joy, and peace. What do you guys think this gospel means in your own words?

I've seen some TV preachers ask me (well everyone who was watching I guess) to send them $1,000 as "seed" money, as an act of faith. They promised that if I sent them the $1,000 then God would multiply it back to me 10X, and I would eventually get $10,000 as a result of my "seed" money.

My question is, if they really believe that.... why don't they send me $1,000 instead, so that God can give them their $10,000. I mean... that only makes sense doesn't it?

Silly preachers....

The prosperity gospel is a con job to take money from those with faith and give it to those with greed.

That's why I'm not watching/listening/following Joel Osteen, and Joyce Meyer anymore. They want us to help by giving a certain amount. Not going to.

Mark 8:36; "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
Mark 8:37; "For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

1 Tim 6:5; and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.
1 Tim 6:6; But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.
1 Tim 6:7; For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.

Tit 1:10; For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
Tit 1:11; who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.

1 Pet 5:1; Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,
1 Pet 5:2; shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;

Php 1:17; the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.

Jas 4:3; You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Matt 6:24; "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Matt 19:23; And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 19:24; "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

1 Tim 6:9; But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
1 Tim 6:10; For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

So, from what I gather, God is, was, and always will be above all else. These televangelist people shouldn't ask for money for their gain.

All real prosperity is is "mans ability to use God's ability to help mankind. Financial prosperity is for one thing...To help mankind.

I would like to add to this if I may.
True Biblical Prosperity ............when most people hear the word prosperity they automatically think MONEY or finances.......They are NOT wrong BUT INCOMPLETE !!
It is Prospering in your entire being or life. Such as spiritually and health and relationships attitude and so forth.

Picture a pie cut up into many slices............that is biblical prosperity and finances is but one slice.
Most people who put down on any kind of teaching on prosperity - only think they know what is being taught.

Yes there can be some false teachers but GOD takes care of His own and they do not stand long AND yet many who are falsely accused by the brethren and world seem to continue to grow and see God working through them..... go figure........

I apologize Bendito for going on off of your thread but hearing the brethren falsely accuse Gods servants rubs me wrong. ;)
God Bless

Dana...Here's the thing....You took that info from a worldly site...Then you listen to the worlds definition of what prosperity is.....All you have been taught about prosperity is wrong, totally wrong! See, the world, and unfortunately most churches teach that prosperity is the accumulation of wealth for one's own gratification...That is NOT correct... That is in the Babylonian system, Satan's system....In the devils system wealth of any kind is like water..It gets dammed up and it grows stagnant, It stinks...And the owner of that wealth is spending major time and expense to hang on to it. That's the curse of it.

In God's system, prosperity is not to be kept to ones self. Its like a free flowing stream, moving constantly and a bit of excitement here and there to give it air. It's clean and sweet to drink...That's the blessing.

So in Gods Word He says He wants to bless us so we can bless others. He wants us rich so we can support others, help others etc. God is not poor, Jesus was not poor, and He does NOT want us poor...

Proverbs 10:22

The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it

Look at this last verse….

Proverbs 10:22

The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it The world system of prosperity always adds sorrow with it. Sorrow means … pain, hurt, toil, sorrow, labour, hardship..

We have no need to sorrow over our prosperity, because its not for our hoarding, its for our being distributors of prosperity….

We are blessed to be a blessing.

Here is a good single way to look at the word "sorrow" when we read The Blessings of the Lord maketh us rich and adds No "Sorrow" to it..... Replace the word sorrow wit TOIL which is also to struggle.
Blessings

So you take your guidance from the world and not from God?

What does God say about us being prospered, blessed if you will, can you say? Probably not judging by your post above..Let me help you here...

The very first words God spoke to man were......Blessings!! Yay God!
God gave man dominion in the Earth....He gave man reign over the Earth....He who reigns controls all the riches in his domain...Well, That's us.

Genesis 22:14 – Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD is my provider. As it is said to this day, “In the LORD’s mountain it will be provided.”

2 Chronicles 16:9a – For the eyes of the LORD run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.

Nehemiah 8:10 – …neither be you grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Psalms 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the way of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers; But his delight is in the law of the LORD; On his law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalms 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.

Psalms 31:19-21 – Oh how great is your goodness, Which you have laid up for those who fear you, Which you have worked for those who take refuge in you, Before the sons of men! In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues. Praise be to the LORD, For he has shown me his marvelous loving kindness in a strong city.

Psalm 32:10 – Many sorrows shall be to the wicked, But he who trusts in the LORD, loving kindness shall surround him.

Psalms 34:5, 6 – I sought the LORD, and he answered me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.

Psalms 34:9, 10 – Oh fear the LORD, you his saints, For there is no lack with those who fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

Psalms 37:1-9 – Don’t fret because of evil-doers, Neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture. Also delight yourself in the LORD, And he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this: He will make your righteousness go forth as the light, And your justice as the noon day sun. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who makes wicked plots happen. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers shall be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.

Psalms 84:11 – For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. the LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

Psalms 103:5 – [The LORD] satisfies your desire with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalms 104:27, 28 – These all wait for you, That you may give them their food in due season. You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.

Psalms 107:9 – For he satisfies the longing soul. He fills the hungry soul with good.

Psalms 119:57a- The Lord is my portion.

Psalms 119:92, 93 – Unless your law had been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, For with them, you have revived me.

Psalms 145:16 – You open your hand, And satisfy the desire of every living thing.

Proverbs 3:5, 6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will direct your paths.

Isaiah 40:28-31 – Have you not known? have you not heard? The everlasting God, The LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding. He gives power to the faint; and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but those who wait for The LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

Isaiah 58:11 …and the LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in dry places, and make strong your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters don’t fail.

Jeremiah 17:5-8 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose trust the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

Matthew 6:31-33 “Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed? ‘For the Gentiles seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 10:39 – He who finds his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

John 3:27 – John answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.”

John 4:13, 14 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 15:5-7 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

John 16:33 – I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.

Galatians 2:20 – I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God (Jesus's faith), who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

1 Corinthians 2:9, 10 – But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, Which didn’t enter into the heart of man, These God has prepared for those who love him.” But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 – But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God.

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.(Try that when you're flat broke)

2 Corinthians 12:9, 10 He has said to me, “My grace (My empowering presence) is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

2 Corinthians 2:14 – Now thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and reveals through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

Ephesians 3:20, 21 – Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 5:6, 7 – Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

2 Peter 1:2, 3 – Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness…”

1 John 2:17 – The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.

1 John 3:21, 22 – Beloved, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have boldness toward God; and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 4:4 – You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.

1 John 5:18 – We know that whoever is born of God doesn’t sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn’t touch him.

What does your Wikipedia say about that?

The riches we have in Christ are not material. We will reflect that which we put our heart into working toward. If our focus is on the material, then it will not be spiritual. The best we can hope for those into the prosperity gospel is the barest foundation surviving, and the rest being burnt away. We should strive to live a meager, less greedy life, working enough to keep the body and family going, and focus on the spiritual. All else is a lie.

Brad...That's horsefeathers....
Psalms 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.
means I have everything I need....
How does poverty fit in with Psalms 34:9, 10 – Oh fear the LORD, you his saints, For there is no lack with those who fear him. NO lack...That includes ALL of your needs spiritual, and physical.
Psalms 84:11 – For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. the LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly. NO GOOD THING withheld...Financial prosperity so we can minister financially...Thats a good thing...Prime health so we can minister health, that's a good thing..But sorry Those are only physical so no deal..You can't have them..Right? NOT right.

Oh yes!! Whatever you do, don't do this or you'll wind up with all sorts of physical stuff to pull you down....Don't 'But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.' You don't want these 'things' They're part of the curse I guess.

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work ....What part of SUFFICIENCY IN EVERYTHING does not work for you? If God gives it to you, is it bad? Really? What does the word 'everything' leave out?

1 Peter 5:6, 7 – Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;... Those that teach that God wants us poor is thinking from a strange form of pride...Like God does not know what He's doing by making us rich....I'm too holy to need money...Ok It's selfish too....So you have enough money to live on and support your family...But what about that poor dufus on the street who is getting frostbite on his feet from holey shoes? You only have enough for you, too bad for him. Right? Or the family that is about to get evicted because they can't pay their house payment? Too bad so sad.......Well brother...If they get kicked to the curb its your fault... and while they get evicted you missed a chance to share Gods love with them, keep them in their house and share the gospel with them......On and on and on you poverty preacher are screwing the poor people in this world with that I'm so spiritual junk, when you are supposed to be out there blessing them and bringing them into the kingdom.

All this spiritual riches and no physical riches doctrine is just an excuse to NOT live by faith.

What we really need, is what God says that we need. That is not the same thing for every person.

Some people needed to die naturally very early such as for instance, Stephen who is my first recorded martyr after the resurrection of Jesus.

Some need to be poor materially because material riches is their worst enemy as for instance the rich young ruler who was advised by Jesus to sell all that he had and give it to the poor.

There is no lack of that which God knows that they need. Men think they know what they need, but too often they equate what they need with what they want. Do we need to have enough natural food to eat? Rather what we need is the Word of God. That is what keeps us ALIVE. We can have more money than anyone else on this planet Earth without knowing God and we are then effectively dead in the eyes of God. We do not then have the Life that we need, which is Jesus, which is the Word of God.

God will give good health to those He decides to give it for His purpose, for what He requires of a person. That is what they need. But He determines who needs it and what or how much is needed. Not every believer does need all of the same things. God will give believers what they need according to the walk He has placed before them, but individual needs differ according to their calling in God. I know of some folks in Haiti who partake regularly of the Word of God, but still seldom get even a small fraction as much to eat of material food as you or I each and every day.

1 Peter 5:6, 7 – Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;... Those that teach that God wants us poor is thinking from a strange form of pride...

Some cannot make it any other way other than materially poor. How much money did Peter have when he said, "silver and gold have I none but such as I have give I thee." I doubt that he had a bank account anywhere. He was speaking, I believe, of his total financial condition in that moment. In the things of this world, he was as poor as the beggar. Isn't what we need to find, @Bendito, in the way of material riches [or the lack thereof], exactly what God wants us or doesn't want us to have to best accomplish His purpose for us in this world? Will not God also lead us into material riches or away from them according to His purpose for us? We don't all walk the same road and we are not supposed to....

I only responded to you because of the way you put down Brad, a very old and dear friend of mine. His post was pretty much in favor of the poor man Christian whereas yours was arguing more in favor of Christian's being materially rich.

I know what you said and I read the verses you posted. I just wanted both you and whoever else reads this thread to realize that there is a middle ground. You kind of showed it but your words seemed more to me to be a mixed message. The answer always is God Way when the person always is going God's Way, but not too many, if any, seem to be doing that. More people are moving along a mixed pathway, partly on God's path and partly on their own. As their spiritual eyes and ears improve and their obedience to what they see and hear from God improves, they will increase the time spent on God's pathway and decrease the time spent on their own path.

But, there is only One Way to God, the individual pathways He provided are different for different people. They are, or are to be different parts of the Body of Christ with different functions. Some may need to be materially rich while others may need to be materially poor. God knows.

I shant argue the point Bendito. I will let the Lord explain it to you. There is nothing wrong with having wealth, but it becomes a trap to most because most dont have the wisdom to use it responsibly. I pray that all christians would only have enough to survive on with perhaps a little extra, for then they would depend on the Lord more so instead of money. There is plenty of scripture that supports my stance, but I wont bother listing it, if you want to study the matter, its there.
