You are correct. At that time Jesus was reciting the verses in what is now referred to as the Old Testament. In the Old Testament many of the verses portrayed the Israelites as devious people. In the Old Testament God chose them to be his special children. Later, in those verses God scattered them because of their ungodly ways. Because of this the local Rabis told the Romans that if they stopped Jesus’s teachings, they, the Jewish people would stop the resistance against the Romans. The Romans crucified Jesus; the resistance stopped. End of story.
