Is a spirit a person. John 4:24 states that God is a spirit. Col. 2:8 shows that he is speaking of Christ. Vs. 9 states, "in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily". I beleive this scripture shows that Christ is the only person in the Godhead

"For there are three that bear record in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one." Thank you Kaddeesh yes it is in 1 John but it is also in the Old Testiment, in exactly the same words. This is what i was looking for as further verification of my thread on "The Bible 1or2 Testiments".

thank you pshun. I love posts like this ... i love learning so this is sweet.

On and off, I have been going into this trinity doctrine for some time. I have also done a search in the KJV/BBE/Darby, on eSword, for that same scripture which you are saying, is in the Old Testiment.

Can you put it up here please, as I can't find it.

1Jo 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Yes, I have seen the one in the new testiment, but paganmystic was saying that the same words of 1 John 5:7 is in the old testiment.

It's the one in the old testiment I would liked to see.

Spiritually discerned

The nature of God will only be grasped by a quickened Spirit.
For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. (1Co 2:16 NASB)

The actual quote from 1 John is this: "For there are three that testify; the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three are in agreement." (1 Jn 5:7-8)

The Old Testament reference is to Deuteronomy 17:6 - "On the testimony of two or three witnesses shall a matter be decided."

For a verse in the old testement go to Genesis. Look in Genesis 1:26 this is just one example of many.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepth on the earth. Genesis 1:26

The Bible clearly tells us that the trinity exists... Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one. I could never really understand it, and while I was in Bible college I heard a really good example. It's like an egg... You get the shell, the "white" and the yolk. It's different parts of the egg, but it's still one... an egg. Just felt like sharing that, hehe!

there is another way to explain the Trinity I was toying with for my book. We are the jewel in the crown of creation(although, many time we don't act like it). We were created in our Father's image. That is just a metaphorical, as well as physical. We were created with a heart, mind and soul, this doesn't make us 3 seperated beings but 1 complete being. In are daily lives, we are suppose to show this, with who we know and who me meet. It is used to move forward in life or it will destroy us. Isn't this how we view God, we also have to see it in ourselves how else are we to be more Godly in what we do and how we act.
I know He didn't make a mistake in creating us, the mistake is ours for not using and share what He gave us.

the trinity-true or false?

my answer?! of course!!! from the start in gen. the three was present. please quote the word used.."Let us..." sometimes, we find it hard to fathom because, we are humans created by God. anyway, forgive me if i will say "Christianity without the doctrine of the trinity is a BIG QUESTIONMARK!.

It seems to me that without the Trinity (Father,Son, and Holy Spirit) Jesus doesn't exist and salvation doesn't happen.

In the original Hebrew of Genesis, when it says "God" (i.e. Gen. 1:26) it is the word Elohim. This is a plural unity. Some modern examples of plural unities in our English would be "family", "church", "club", "man" (when referring to the species), or "egg". Plural unities refer to multiple aspects, members, etc. that share a common bond. When referring to God as Elohim, it meant God The Father, God The Word (Who later dwelt among us as The Son of God, Jesus), and God The Holy Spirit. Each of them have unique characteristics, and functions within the Godhead, yet they are in complete unity in purpose, thought, and action. Each of them is God, and together they are God. When Jesus said that if you have seen Him, you have seen the Father, the Greek is actually clearer. In a nutshell, He said "I am the revelation of the Father, for I have come from Him. What more do you need?" God The Holy Spirit directs us to God The Son, Who brings us before God The Father. There is no other way to The Father.

I believe in the Trinity.

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

I wanted to post here, but don't want to be banned. My belief on the trinity is that God and Jesus are two separate beings, who are connected by the holy spirit, which is the power of God. Jesus and God are beings, the Holy Spirit is not.

You cannot back up your belief with Scripture. The Scripture quoted repetitively in this thread make it clear GOD is One GOD made of 3 beings, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Anyone who denies this is not honest, or at least does not care to respect the Word for what it is.

I'm confident you did not bother reading the 12 pages here. Had you done so, you'll see the Scriptures quoted.

***

This has been discussed many times so I will simply copy/paste my responses from the other threads. Although GOD is made of 3 persons as One GOD - it is One Spirit. I have purposely marked them in red (any names pertaining to the 3 person of our One GOD). My information below should show that GOD is 3 persons in One Spirit, One GOD.

Acts 5:30-32

30The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead—whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

Acts 7:55-57
55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56"Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."

Luke 22:69
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

Mark 16:19
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

Luke 22:69
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

Hebrews 12:2
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [ Hebrew; Syriac all the wild animals ] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Trinity: Webster’s dictionary gives the following definition of trinity: “The union of three divine persons (or hypostases), the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in one divinity, so that all the three are one God as to substance, but three Persons (or hypostases as to individuality).” Synonyms sometimes used are triunity, trine, triality. The term “trinity” is formed from “tri,” three, and “nity,” unity. Triunity is a better term than “trinity” because it better expresses the idea of three in one. God is three in one. Hypostases is the plural of hypostasis which means “the substance, the underlying reality, or essence.”

Tri-theism. This is the teaching that there are three Gods who are sometimes related, but only in a loose association. Such an approach, abandons the biblical oneness of God and the unity within the Trinity

1 Corinthians 8:4-6 “Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”

Ephesians 4:4-6There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”

James 2:19 “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.”

There are many instances where God uses the plural pronoun to describe Himself (see Gen. 1:26; 3:22; 11:7; Isa. 6:8).

Several passages reveal a distinction of Persons within the Godhead.
  • In Psalm 110:1, David demonstrates there is a distinction of Persons between “LORD,” the one speaking, and the one addressed called by David, “my Lord.” David was indicating the Messiah was no ordinary king, but his own Lord, Adoni (my Lord), one who was God Himself. So God the first Person addresses God the second Person. This is precisely Peter’s point when He quotes this Psalm to show the resurrection of the Messiah was anticipated in the Old Testament.
  • The Redeemer (who must be divine, Isa. 7:14; 9:6) is distinguished from the Lord (Isa. 59:20).
  • The Lord is distinguished from the Lord in Hosea 1:6-7. The one speaking here is Yahweh, the Lord, yet, note the statement in verse 7, “I will have compassion … and deliver them by the Lord their God.”
  • The Spirit is distinguished from the Lord in a number of passages (Isa. 48:16; 59:21; 63:9-10).
(1) The Father is called God (John 6:27; 20:17; 1 Cor. 8:6; Gal. 1:1; Eph. 4:6; Phil. 2:11; 1 Pet. 1:2).

(2) Jesus Christ, the Son is declared to be God. His deity is proven by the divine names given to Him, by His works that only God could do (upholding all things, Col. 1:17; creation, Col. 1:16, John 1:3; and future judgment, John 5:27), by His divine attributes (eternality, John 17:5; omnipresence, Matt. 28:20; omnipotence, Heb. 1:3; omniscience, Matt. 9:4), and by explicit statements declaring His deity (John 1:1; 20:28; Titus 2:13; Heb. 1:8).

(3) The Holy Spirit is recognized as God. By comparing Peter’s comments in Acts 5:3 and 4, we see that in lying to the Holy Spirit (vs. 3), Ananias was lying to God (vs. 4). He has the attributes which only God can possess like omniscience (1 Cor. 2:10) and omnipresence (1 Cor. 6:19), and He regenerates people to new life (John 3:5-6, 8; Tit. 3:5), which must of necessity be a work of God for only God has the power of life. Finally, His deity is evident by the divine names used for the Spirit as “the Spirit of our God,” (1 Cor. 6:11), which should be understood as “the Spirit, who is our God.”

Ryrie writes: “Matthew 28:19 best states both the oneness and threeness by associating equally the three Persons and uniting them in one singular name. Other passages like Matthew 3:16-17 and 2 Corinthians 13:14 associate equally the three Persons but do not contain the strong emphasis on unity as does Matthew 28:19.”18

2 Cor. 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

1 Peter 1:1-5 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, tat you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

John 20:17
Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "

John 13:3
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God.

Dictionary:

Gentiles
(Heb., usually in plural, goyim), meaning in general all nations except the Jews. In course of time, as the Jews began more and more to pride themselves on their peculiar privileges, it acquired unpleasant associations, and was used as a term of contempt.

In the New Testament the Greek word Hellenes, meaning literally Greek (as in Acts 16:1, 3; 18:17; Rom. 1:14), generally denotes any non-Jewish nation.

emily has the best post there in 1John.

jenwat3 many have had that thought for a long time, it is sad. Sorry I don't want to offend you but it is such a fundimental understanding and if we are to pray to God and God only to pray through Jesus would actually be a sin as would requesting the Spirit to come to those we know and love.

The best thing about being in Canada/US as long as you are respectful to others what we say as a point of belief is protected by law ... nope you fine.

God bless you and welcome

Good point pagan, I did not catch Emily's post prior to Jen's. Jen, you need to study the Word, and study in prayer (as in pray for wisdom).

How we receive the interpretation of the Bible is not optional. Its either going to be interpreted to us by the Holy Spirit, or we'll interpret it wrongly by our own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Jen, the Bible states the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one being, not multiple. :)

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Yes, it is true that many bibles state this. However, as stated in previous posts by others, these words were never in the original manuscripts. They were added much later by people trying to confirm their belief in the trinity. A few questions I have are
1) How can a being be distributed? Many recieve the Holy Spirit upon conversion.
2) If the Holy Spirit were an actual being, why would it need to be renewed within a person?
3) If Jesus and the Father were one, how could Jesus return to the Father? Would He not be returning to Himself?
4) If Jesus and the Father were one, how could Jesus say He was doing His Father's will, not His own?
Just a few questions I would like to be answered...
