“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” // ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭10:5‬

In speaking of our spiritual warfare, Paul says that we take every thought captive and subject all thinking to Christ Jesus. Here are the apostle’s words: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

The primary point in this section of 2 Corinthians is that we are in a spiritual warfare. What leads up to the statement that we take every thought captive is important. In verse 3 Paul states that though we walk in the flesh we do not war after the flesh. That is, we do not rely on human ingenuity or manmade plans to bring the victory. The flesh is powerless against the wiles of the devil. In verse 4 Paul mentions the “strongholds” or the “fortresses” that are destroyed by God’s power. These strongholds are the philosophies, arguments, and “proud opinions” mentioned in verse 5.

Without question, there are many human thoughts that need to be taken captive. Numerous ungodly philosophies hold people in bondage, and those spiritual “fortresses” need to be demolished. The systems of thought that war against us are “arrogant obstacles” (NET), “lofty opinions” (ESV), and “sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing” (AMP) that prevent people from knowing God. In our day, these systems of human thought include the theory of evolution, secular humanism, existentialism, the cults, the occult, and false religions. How many people are held captive by the idea that they are the products of chance in a godless universe? How many spiritual prisoners labor under the requirements of Allah and await freedom in Christ? We must take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

False religion and secular philosophy have created thinking that has imprisoned the minds of millions. It is a true spiritual battle: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Any idea, opinion, or worldview that asserts that Christ is unnecessary is reflective of the devil’s pride. Such thoughts must be taken captive and made obedient to Christ. Those who know the truth must confront error with the weapon we’ve been given, the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17).

Our weapons in the spiritual battle are not carnal but mighty through God. As we are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2), we engage the battle against pretense and arrogant philosophy in the world. Trusting Christ and rightly dividing the Word of God (2 Timothy 2:15), we take every thought captive, pull down the strongholds, and, by the grace of God, set the captives free.

Thank you for sharing this important reminder, Brother

Bless you ....><>

How often does a negative thought come into your head and you roll it around, chew on it and even speak it? Jesus said to 'take no thought by saying...
Matthew 6:30-32....When a negative thought comes into your mind, speak Gods Word instead, and let the evil thought die stillborn..

There are many ways to teach the verse.

Here are 2.

1.) the devil wants you, the born again, to stop trusting in Christ alone to get you into heaven, and fall back into the idea of "here is what i have to do"... So, once you are there, you have left real faith, and have fallen victim to what Paul defines as "falling from Grace". Falling from Grace is any type of self faith, or faith in self or faith in "what i have to do now to stay saved".... vs realizing and believing at all times that you are ALREADY Saved, and are already "the righteousness of God in Christ".

2. Taking captive all your thoughts, is to be sober minded and filter what you are thinking about and keep this under control. This takes some discipline...
First...... to begin to notice when something that should not be in your head is running a movie AS your mind, and then, you have to shut it off. Eventually, you notice these SCENES immediately, and that is how you make thought's obedient.

Can you expand on your second point a bit? That is good.

Can you expand on your second point a bit? That is good.

Everything with God, regarding how we interact with Him, is faith based.
The NT says that we please God with our faith, yet most are trying to pls God by behavior.

The reason Christians fail, is because they try to live their Christian life, based on how an unbeliever would try to do it.
An unbeliever , if given money to "try to be a christian", will try to do it based on ...."ok, how would i do this"..."how would i try to behave as my idea of how Christ behaves"......and that mind is the same that most born again function within.
In both cases, same end result, which is : im doing it, im doing it, im trying hard, im working at it..., and that is a fail,..... as Christianity is created by God, and its operated by God, or you exist like this...>"Apart from me, you can do nothing", Jesus said.
Born again Christians, are ONE with God, .......yet most live apart from this.....>"Christ always gives me the Victory".

A believer will read this verse.....>"put on the whole armor of God", and they think this means...>"try harder, pray more, resist sin, strive, endure.".......and all that stuff is self effort.
The verse says you put on God's armor, yet the believer is trying to BE God's armor, not understanding that the verse it talking about "CHRIST always GIVES ME The Victory".

Real discipleship, the kind that succeeds, is actually to stop trying to do it, and begin to live in it, as real faith.

The first step into the power of God, is to stop trying to be good, and to instead realize that you are "made righteous", and have become "the righteousness of God, in Christ", already.

The overcoming life, is not found by self effort, its actually denied by self effort.
The overcoming life is lived correctly as who you have become as a "new creation, in Christ".
Christians fail, because they do not understand or believe that they are become "ONE with God"....."made Righteous".
End that wrong mind, and learn to see yourself as God has birthed you to be as a "new Creation" "In Christ", , and you find that Armor of God and that mind that is this...."walking in the spirit".

KJV 2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Most people reach a conclusion early in their understanding of scripture. The "Ooo I get it" thinking they understand the Bible message. We tend to use our common sense to interpret its meaning.
Our common sense
is of the flesh.
God said, "your thoughts are not my thoughts; your ways are not my ways"
One has to reach a spiritual nature to be able to discern understanding of the Word of God. This doesn't happen overnight.
One has to understand the Old Testament and the New. and how they bind and reflect on each other.

"Casting down imaginations": set your imgination to one side.

"and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God": when we start to thinking " Oh I got this"; when we use our fleshly common sense and apply it as fact,
there is a possibility you are going against the knowledge of God;

"and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" capture your thoughts very carfully and alway prove you understanding to be true by finding the answers in God's Word.

Another aspect to this is simply to take control of your thoughts and don't let them run rampant. We must control all facets of our selves and keep the enemy from moving in.

Yes I posted this interview with Neil t Anderson spiritual warfare uncut
He specifically talked about taking thoughts captive
Spiritual warfare is a BIG study of mine I believe the war is for your mind to take your soul and unclean spirits need a physical body like a car needs gas
To manipulate the body the spirit needs to deceive you through the mind and I have read a few Neil t books I recommend the bondage breaker and freedom in Christ
I think you might find it interesting
Shalom

I really like this thread. I used to have a really hard time taking my thoughts captive. I struggled with anxiety and self injury and had a low self esteem. I'd repeat this verse quite often. I still do struggle with my thought life, but am better then before.

Romans 12:1-2 helps quite a bit in taking thoughts captive. Transforming the mind instead of just trying to change the thinking is the real way to take thoughts captive. Transformation is permanent while change is temporary

Reader..

Notice this part of the verse...

"" bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"""" = This is the context .

But its never explained correctly, so, lets take a quick look ....

Notice..

"to the obedience of Christ"..

See that? This is talking about what Christ has accomplished.......... in other words......what is the Obedience of Christ?

A.) He said......"not my will but yours Father, that i will do."" "No one takes my life but i lay it down, willingly"...

See that?
This is Jesus The Christ being obedient all the way to DEATH on the Cross...............to accomplish what ????

A.) Grace for you. Atonement for you. Mercy for You. REDEMPTION for you....... = through Christ's Obedience.........not yours.

How did Christ accomplish it? = As a GIFT. "the Gift of Salvation" "the Gift of Righteousness'... the Gift of Eternal life.

Through what? = Christ's Blood and Death and Resurrection, that SUPPLIES your SALVATION as a "GIFT".

See that "GIFT"? That Gift is earned for you by Christ's OBEDIENCE.

Now look at the verse. again... and apply all that..

How?

Like this..

When you have thoughts that suggest to you, that you are the author of your salvation or that you have to earn it, keep it....etc....... That its up to you to be accepted by GOD, ......based on your WORKS....

See that? = That is ANTI - GRACE spiritual blindness...... And the verse says, you are to take those thoughts, that are anti-Cross.....anti = "GIFT of Salvation" and put them at the feet of Jesus whose "OBEDIENCE" > is why you are accepted by God.........and for no other reason.

IN other words you are to DENY thoughts that try to cause you to believe that you control your salvation, or that you have to earn it or keep it.

You are to take those anti-Cross, anti-Grace THOUGHTS "captive"........because you understand that its by Christ's OBEDIENCE that you are allowed by this GRACE OF GOD, to be born again, saved, and redeemed.

Very good thoughts, @Bethel . We are saved by grace, not by works. This is one thought that needs to be cast down also by so many. It would transform peoples' lives to know they are saved by grace and not by works. Sanctification is definitely important. Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ is definitely important.

Captivate every thought that is contrary to the will of God and cast them down. Captivate every thought that is of God and keep them in the midst of your heart.

6 "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 "of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10 "of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11 "of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear [them] now.
13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own [authority], but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

XXX The heart is the intent of a thought. And the Holy Spirit searches the heart of the spirits within you. And He makes intercession with verses to teach us with. The Holy Spirit teaches us about our own minds. And reveals all the different spirits that are in us. So we can resist them and get rid of them. The devil wants you looking outside of yourself for devils. The Holy Spirit wants you looking inside yourself for devils. Conflicting thoughts is conflicting spirits. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Do you think that all your thoughts are from You???? All your thoughts are suggestions from the different spirits that are in you.God wants you to understand so that you never trust your own thoughts over any verses you might receive from the Holy Spirit.

"But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
"For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Every Thought

The context is :

1. ) "every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God"

2.) " obedient to Christ".

So, what thoughts, in the "time of the Gentiles" are pretension, that need to be made obedient to Christ?

This verse is talking about Fake Gospels.......False Gospels.

A Fake Gospel is a Gospel of Religion, or a Gospel of Self Effort.....where the Faith of this theology does not seek God's Grace, but seeks SELF Grace.

"Self Grace" is ....."what do I DO, ... to try to CAUSE GOD to Accept me and Keep Me".

So, that is every "Another Gospel" that Paul describes in Galatian 1:8.

That is every Gospel that does not give full and all credit due to Christ alone for saving you and keeping you saved.

Here are a few ...

"you must be water baptized to go to heaven"

" you must keep the law and commandments, to go to heaven"

"you must join THIS Church, to go to Heaven".

"you must endure to the end, to go to heaven"

"" HERE IS WHAT YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU.....MUST....MUST.....MUST.....DO.....DO.....DO........OR .... DON'T DO....TO .....SAVE YOURSELF"..

See that?

So, all that is the pretension that sets itself up in the THOUGHT PROCESS that is against God , so....this must be brought down to = FAITH IN CHRIST ALONE....... as that is the "obedient to Christ" context of the verse.

Just found this thread -- it's interesting.

We are in the end of the "time of the Gentiles".
This "TIME" started when Christ was raised on the Cross, and will end when the Great Trib starts.
See that 'time period", ????? that has existed for over 2000 yrs? That is the "time of the Gentiles'. Its a "season" or a "dispensation" when God is bringing into His spiritual family the non-Jew.

OR as John 3:16-17 teach...>"the world"., as Christ was lifted up on the Cross for "ALL who will come'......."ALL" is the world.........the entire world full of people..

So, this is the "time of the GENTILES"........not the time of the jew........And then this time period ends.......and God will again deal with the JEW specifically and the World at large directly in a fierce way...., and that is the '"Great Tribulation".

See it?
That is not rocket science. As "bible" revelaiton isn't hard to understand, what is difficult is the believing part as this is based on spiritual discernment ......as all that God does, you can't SEE IT, yet, its always happening...
So, you have to spiritually discern God's ways, and God's dealings. "he that is spiritual discerns all things"..>"the word of God is Spiritually discerned"...= ONLY.

In Romans 1, God says that humans have no excuse.....when they say....>"well i'll believe it when i see it"........as God says....>"LOOK AROUND, see the stars, the Sun, the planets, the forests, the sea's, the blue sky, .....notice the GRAVITY........notice that THE SUN is just far enough away to keep you warm, and not so close as to burn you like TOAST".

God says.........."SEE ALL THAT and MORE>.........its everywhere if you LOOK BECAUSE I CREATED ALL THAT........and .its EASILY SEEN as you can't keep from seeing my CREATION>........so you have no excuse when you try to lie and say.......>"we will believe it when we see it".......

Now, in these end times of the Gentiles, there is a famine of : "the preaching of the Cross".
You can barely hear this.....as all you hear in church and on Forums is. ....>"law"....."commandments"...>>"you must do this"....."water saves if you are baptized".....
Everywhere you go, if you are believer, you will not hear the Gospel of GRACE......you will only hear the screeching of the self saver, ... the spiritual pretender who is teaching you that you must do this and keep that, and be good enough......and if you will keep trying hard enough, then God just might let you in, when you die.

See all that? That is LEGALISM.......>Legalism, is .......'i dont trust in Christ, i just pretend i do..... What i trust in is my SELF EFFORT to get into heaven, and here is my list of do's and dont do's that im doing or not doing to try to SAVE MYSELF" That is what i "PREACH". This False Gospel. Galatians 1:8

See that? That is not faith in Christ .......that is faith in Self...........That is the person up on the Cross, as a SELF Saver, and Jesus is not up there in that case. He's been removed by their SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

So, when a person is ALL THAT....then they are not doing what this THREADS VERSE says to do......they have not brought their imaginations and their deceived theology under control.

They do not live HERE in their FAITH.... Hebrews 13:9

They do not have FAITH in CHRIST ALONE to get them to heaven........

Here is the thing........... Nearly everyone will agree that Christ saves them, but only those who have brought their faithless thoughts and theologically deceived imaginations into submission to Christ, will teach this...."Christ KEEPS me saved".

See that?.......THAT is real faith.....THAT is faith in Christ.......its not just .....>"yeah i know that Christ saves.............ITS = i KNOW THAT CHRIST KEEPS ME SAVED".

THAT is real Faith in CHRIST, and few FEW have it., as most do not believe that Christ keeps them saved, and that is because their faith is broken, and that is why their preaching, teaching, is all about WORKS and SELF EFFORT.....in place of Faith in Christ ALONE.

@Bethel,

YOUR MISGUIDED AND UNGODLY QUOTE ONCE AGAIN: "We are in the end of the "time of the Gentiles".This "TIME" started when Christ was raised on the Cross, and will end when the Great Trib starts. Seriously, I really do not want to school pseudo-christians like you all the time, okay? But, it is ONLY THE JEW in the first place of the 12 tribes of Israel that can follow Jesus' inspired words and no other ethnic group whatsoever! You can once again be enlightened with yet another one of my Jesus inspired posts upon this topic herewith: Yes, I am questioning the Judeo-Christian Bible in the 21st Century ......

I am truly sorry that you never returned to me helping you with your SUPER MISGUIDED NOTION of you thinking that Christians are always forgiven! NOT! Whereas I had shown you with Jesus' inspired biblical axioms that they are NOT ALWAYS FORGIVEN as shown in these revealing posts that you ran away from: #27, #34!

Bethel, you might want to start telling the TRUTH within the scriptures for a change, instead of your personal Satanic opinions, yes? Remember, Jesus is watching you perform your ungodly acts in His name (Hebrews 4:13), and always remember, THERE IS A JUDGMENT DAY!!!

.

.
@Bethel,

as shown in these revealing posts that you ran away from: #27, #34!

Try not to confuse "running away from " with "bored with talking to a religious Pauline Theology denier.".

I dont think you are very honest, and i find your online personality to be theologically ignorant + offensive, on purpose.
You claim to want to help people, yet you can't even explain the Blood Atonement or the Gospel of the Grace of God.
So, im not certain what Cult birthed you and your religion, but you are this : Galatians 1:8

Also, there is no "Judgment day" waiting for the born again., there is only Eternal Life with God IN Christ, that all the Born Again, already possess.
See, God as Christ on the Cross has already resolved the "judgment due all for their sin".....and once you go there and get this eternal resolution taken care of by receiving the "the Gift of Righteousness"', then you don't have to fear Revelation 20:11 anymore, BrotherDThomas.
You should do this ASAP.
