That was an interesting sermon. He didn't say anything overly controversial though. Even what you have underlined is understandable. God's wrath is terrible. Eternal separation is terrible and eternal.Maybe so but that does not eliminate the horror of hell. Only recently have people come to think of hell like you do. Most if not all events and happenings in the Bible were always taken literally till people recently changed their ways through education, embarrassment, conformity etc. There is nothing ambiguous about burning in hell for ever. Lord Jesus believed it and St Paul was motivated NOT by the love of God to save the lost but by the terror / fear of God. Paul preached: "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord we persuade men." ( 2 Cor. 5:11)
Why because God can put you in hell. If Hell was not too bad a place why preach the gospel to save sinners from entry.
And most revivals began when preachers preached on sin and its consequence in a torturous horror filled hell.

" Edwards was interrupted many times during the sermon by people moaning and crying out, "What shall I do to be saved?". Although the sermon has received criticism, Edwards' words have endured and are still read to this day. Edwards' sermon continues to be the leading example of a Great Awakening sermon and is still used in religious and academic studies. "
Most of the sermon's text consists of ten "considerations":
- 1. God may cast wicked men into hell at any given moment.
- 2. The wicked deserve to be cast into hell. Divine justice does not prevent God from destroying the Wicked at any moment.
- 3. The wicked, at this moment, suffer under God's condemnation to Hell.
- 4. The wicked, on earth—at this very moment—suffer a sample of the torments of Hell. The wicked must not think, simply because they are not physically in Hell, that God (in Whose hand the wicked now reside) is not—at this very moment—as angry with them as He is with those miserable creatures He is now tormenting in hell, and who—at this very moment—do feel and bear the fierceness of His wrath.
- 5. At any moment God shall permit him, Satan stands ready to fall upon the wicked and seize them as his own.
- 6. If it were not for God's restraints, there are, in the souls of wicked men, hellish principles reigning which, presently, would kindle and flame out into hellfire.
- 7. Simply because there are not visible means of death before them at any given moment, the wicked should not feel secure.
- 8. Simply because it is natural to care for oneself or to think that others may care for them, men should not think themselves safe from God's wrath.
- 9. All that wicked men may do to save themselves from Hell's pains shall afford them nothing if they continue to reject Christ.
- 10. God has never promised to save us from Hell, except for those contained in Christ through the covenant of Grace
There is something else you need to consider on the context of hell. God's viewpoint and His restrictions. As explained on free will, God restricts Himself from getting involved in a lot of what takes place on earth to uphold true free will. He only get's involved with those who want Him to be a part of their lives. Now with respects to heaven and hell. God has waited so long to be properly re-united with us. Us who He loves so much that He showed the greatest act of love for by laying down His life John 15:13. When we are with Him, there is absolutely nothing holding Him back from being a part of our lives. He is going to spoil us. Love us. Reveal amazing truths to us. Our mansions will be so grand and impressive. Those that go to hell however, He can do little to nothing for them. They don't want Him to be a part of their lives. The environment in hell is going to be absolutely terrible in comparison to heaven because of this. Think of some poor people in the world. No matter how much you help them, give them, they will still live in poverty. Some just have a terrible mindset and feel the rich owe them everything. Hell is going to be a home for people that have a different mindset. They have pride, ego, are unrepentant. There is little to none selflessness, joy, kindness. If a rich person in a huge mansion looks at a person in a shanty town, they will say ''they are in suffering, they are in hell''. When scripture says hell is a lake of fire where people have eternal contempt Dan 12:2, it is God of the universe describing a place where He cannot and does not have free reign. Today we have a sun rising, birds singing, children around us, sweet people arounds us. In hell you will not have these things. God cannot trust children or animals with the wicked. People with pride, ego's, liars etc etc. Of course not all are as bad as the next. But all unrepentant sinners. They never ever will or want to repent. God speaks of hell as a place of fire because He is speaking from His vantage point. Comparing heaven where He has free reign to a place where a good God does not have free reign. It will be night and day difference. You have to understand this truth. Those in hell will / have for all eternity, effectively tied God's hands from expressing His love for them. Like a good parent who just wants to cuddle, protect and spoil their child. God cannot do this for them.
