Speaking in Tongues: Required for Regeneration?.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all that heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, who came with Peter, because that on the nations also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can anyone forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?

If this is an extension of what you gave me previously, then I will say that you are taking this passage out of context, just like calvinists do in order to promote their false doctrines. Taking the context of chapters 10-11, and the whole of Acts itself, God did this SINGULAR event in the history of the church for one reason - because up to this point the church was ignoring its mandate to include Gentiles into the Body of Christ. This singular event cannot be legitimately utilized for your argument, because it has NOTHING to do with your argument.

God had to literally slap the church in the face to make them understand that He included Gentiles into the church, and that is what this event was.

Blessings

Still not again the law as to the foundation of matter has not changed. The evidence speaks for itself

“Saw lasaw saw lasawQaw laqaw qaw laqawZe’er sham ze’er sham.”

Isiah 28: 11 So God will use this strange way of talking, and he will use other languages (prophecy ) to speak to these people.

No understanding from God . . no evidence of faith .

Simply again following the matter to end , unbelieving mankind making a mockery of the tongue of God making baby sounds and falling backwards slain in the spirit . Signs not seen by the human eye follow. . they are not sought after.

You can test the scriptures get a poisonous snake at let it inject deadly poison and call that a sign gift .

Genesis 49:17 Dan (the signified spirit of judgement used as a parable ) will be like a snake at the side of the road. He will be like a dangerous snake lying near the path. That snake bites a horse’s foot, and the rider falls (backward ) to the ground.

Falling backwards slain in the spirit is a doctrine found in many places

The poison of snakes is referred as false prophecy .Their leaders called a brood of vipers.

God knew beforehand about those that fall backward slain the spirit

Praise the lord
I have grown up in churches and remember when everyone in the congregation would burst out in tongues I would think in my child’s mind that some alien had taken over these people. Sometimes I would think these people are faking it :joy:
I wasn’t well read in scripture and had no idea what was going on
I can honestly say I have yet to speak in tongues as im sure I would know it
But
I do love the father and I have been blessed with my comforter I’m jealous of those that have received the gift but I see it as not a problem
Just like I’m not 6 foot 9 and can’t dribble a basketball where some people blessed with that gift

I often like the older preachers of the gospel to listen to as I sleep and love Derek princes sermons seeing some confusion on the subject here the lord inspired me to post this
Here is one I found informative on receiving the gifts of the spirit
When the time is right I too will receive my gift so I must admit at this time I’m a bit jealous of you :innocent:
Shalom

No such thing as a outward sign gift (self edifying) .Spiritual gifts not seen work from within .Neither water (water represents the word of God the work of the Holy Spirit ). It can get a person wet but it evaporates . So neither baptism or making a noise falling back slain in the spirit of judgement represent the tongue of God s doctrine . In the end it proves to mock God as those who sek after sign to wonder and marvel . No end of faith the salvation of ones new born again soul. Jesus called that the evil faithless generation natural converted mankind.

Tongues are clearly prophecy spoke in all the tongue of the nations of the world .

The Holy Spirit was received of Able in whom God had grace on in the same way of any believer. . by believing the word of God that works in us.

Acts is not the beginning Genesis is , the foundation of prophecy the tongue of God is found in Isiah 28 . Like David inspired in the Psalms said "destroy the foundation of faith what can the believers do.

There is Holy Spirit "in" you at salvation and there is Holy Spirit "on" you as the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus. He was saved, but He had Holy Spirit on Him. The 120 in the upper room (not just 12 disciples) had Holy Spirit "on" them. Not a requirement for salvation, but surely believe it is the will for every believer to have. The only initial requirement for tongues IS salvation. So it isn't required for salvation, but only believers speak in tongues.

Welcome back!!!! We have been praying for you. How are you feeling?

(Also off topic. :P but I'll check your prayer thread and tag you. :) )

Sorry @Mayflower but this is just plain wrong ...
praying in tongues is the Bible evidence given as the sign of receiving the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of truth, the Comforter indwelling a disciple.
And most definitely required, in fact commanded by Jesus himself.

Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Amen, Amen, I say unto thee, Except one be born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born being an old man? can he enter a second time into the womb of his mother, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Amen, Amen, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 What is born of the flesh is flesh; and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said to thee, Ye must be born from above.
8 The Spirit breatheth where he willeth, and thou hearest his voice, but knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one born of the Spirit.

Prophecy is required . Tongues are used to represent the prophecy of God that makes the oral tradition without effect . The same new gospel tongue given to believers by it the word of God it can cast out lying spirits. Therefore making sound with meaning cast out nothing.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

New tongues the gospel as new creatures

Tongue are always known languages of all the nations of the world as the Spirit gave them utterance worked in them that do believe prophecy .

Acts 2: 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Both tongues and fire working as one metptphor in that parable ,The power of the tongue of God life or death.

1 Kings 18:38 Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up (tongue) the water that was in the trench.

Have you studied the foundation or law of the doctrine (Isiah 28) .to the law and the testimony if they speak no their is no light. they make a noise fall back slain in the spirit mocking prophecy with that oral tradition

The law Isaiah 28 it testimony is revealed in 1 Cororithian 14:21 yet for all that they refuse to beleive prophecy the tongue of God .

1 Cororithian 14:21 In the law (Isaiah 28 ) it is written, With men of other tongues (languages )and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

Hi --I'm only partially back here. I don't have any computer keyboard so am responding back by texting. There is a lot of disagreement on this subject. Thanks for your prayers. Always appreciated.

Having seen/heard tingues all my 75 years. I have yet to seen the flames.

The rushing wind, and the tongues of fire are only mentioned on Acts 2. The other 4 instances where people were filled with the Holy Spirit don't mention these.
Acts 2 is unique because it was the first time people were baptized in the Holy Spirit, also it's the only one of the 5 instances were people didn't lay hands on people
in order to receive it (obviously there was no one existing already - John the baptist might have been an exception, but he was killed already).

There is a lot of disagreement on this subject.

As in almost every other case, it comes down to what the Bible says vs what people think about it.

This is covered in the liberal Christianity vs fundamentalism thread.

Tongue are always known languages of all the nations of the world

Maybe not always.

1Cor 13:1; If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

:pensive: still arguing about the Modern Day English word; "languages". And The "Deceiver" is amaze. He does not even have to deceive or even waste his time among "Millions and Millions" the king of Persian do not have to detain anyone on that front. he can use his forces on other fronts. Where the Battle is Hot. And more important in destroying and discouraging, wounding Warriors who are in the heat of The BATTLE.

And here is another reflection of a "Biblical Motif" Reflection:
These are the names of David’s mighty men:

Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the Three. He wielded his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed AT ONE TIME.:eyes:

Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he went with David to taunt the Philistines who had gathered for battle at Pas-dammim. The men of Israel retreated, BUT Eleazar STOOD His Ground and struck the Philistines until his hand grew weary and stuck to his sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to plunder the dead.

And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines had banded together near a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. But Shammah took HIS STAND in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.

"Now Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the Three, and HE LIFTED HIS SPEAR AGAINST THREE HUNDRED MEN, KILLED THEM, and won a name along with the Three. Was he not more honored than the Three? And he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three"

And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion. He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear."

All of GOD's battles in the Old Testament came alive to me and the Spirit of God place me in those battles in Living Color over 40 years ago as I read them. Types and shadows "New Testament Warfare. only for GOD Warriors, Who must put on the "WHOLE ARMOR of GOD" and be SKILLED with a Sword and Shield for The BATTLE, and The Battle is of The LORD. And HE is The Commander and Our Chief" And the Weapons of Our Warfare are real. and deadly. and many times we must die. No Volunteers here, everyone of us been "Drafted".:pensive: And we do not shoot our own. We train. And we train hard! Skilled in words and "languages". and we all are "Gifted" by GOD. And so was each Tribe of the 12.:eyes:

(Ecclesiastes 9)BSB
"I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all".:eyes:

No telling what GOD will do. I keep my eyes open. we look both ways when we cross the street. Even if the light is green, we walk slowly, stop and look:eyes: and then we roll.

Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Then there is this phrase that must be argued away some how;;

Act 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
Act 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days,
saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Act 2:19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
Act 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

There is a difference between having the Holy Spirit come upon you, and having Him dwell within you.

John 7:39; But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 16:7; “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Jdg 16:20; She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Spirit of Lord had departed from him.

Even Psa 51:11; seems to indicate the Holy Spirit could leave people in the OT.

Exo_35:31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;

Exo 35:21 And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD'S offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.

Num 11:14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
Num 11:17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
