Of course, GIven the "Morals du jour" here in the U.S. there's also a likelyhood, that one or both of them is already in Adultry. A significant percentage of "WEDDINGS" are conducted for people who've already been married in God's sight for months, or even years - maybe several times, and are in an adulterous relatioship even as they "speak their vows".

He got snookered by his now father in law, and roped into another few years of bondage for the gal He THOUGHT he was marrying to begin with. SURPRISE!!!

What you do in the Church (or wherever you do your ceremony / ritual) is nothing more than the execution of a legally binding contract in the presence of witnesses, stipulating a bunch of legal stuff - visitation rights, property ownership, what to do about kids, Taxation, and (of course) who gets the stuff and the kids if/when the contract is breached (Divorce). Some States have a "Common law" provision which states that a legal state of "Marriage" exists if the couple in question have proven to have been co-habiting for some specified length of time - no "Ceremony/Ritual" required.

The Bible couldn't care less about governmental "Legal Requirements" imposed by man (as long as the activity is not illegal).

Paranthetic: When the company I worked for did a job in Sao Paulo, Brazil for Chrysler Corp, (Mechanical Presses and Automation), we were cautioned that IF any of our employees were proven to have co-habited with a Brazilian woman for a period of two weeks or longer, their American passport would be voided, they would become Brazilian citizens, and be legally married to the woman from then on. Since Brazil was in the '80s as corrupt, and crime ridden as it gets politically, there were some SERIOUS bribes to the "authorities" involved before it was all over to get our people out of there.

@Bob Carabbio -- Regarding the Biblical marriage -- Jacob Should have known that the 1st born daughter gets married off 1st as was the custom of that day. He worked 7 years for his first wife -- that's a LONG engagement period. He allowed his love for Rachel to blind himself to the legal custom regarding her sister, Leah.

To Jacob it wasn't bondage -- it Was the custom of that day.

The ceremony means Everything. It's exchanging vows to each other - - promising to love, honor , cherish the other person through the good and the Bad, for the richer or poorer times in life and in both poor health and Good health. And exchanging the rings -- It's being public about your relationship with that other person. It helps keeps a person Faithful --to Not flirt around.

The food and music can be Lousy -- it's being with the person you love and around family and friends who are Happy for you. Wishing you the Best.

The Bible calls the 'joining of flesh' outside of marriage as Fornication / adultery. How many high school kids would be 'married' because they had sex in the back seat of the car. That's rhetorical in nature.

You brought up Sao Paulo , Brazil. My sister and brother-in-law were missionaries there for 40 some years. They brought up their 4 children there and took in street kids.

Part of That -- your situation -- were the guys Really being warned to not mess around with hookers? And did they Really want to have Brazilian citizenship? Don't know what Brazilian laws are in that area of life.
And what kind of diseases would the guys be bringing back home with them?
Back in 'the day' -- guys who'd be over-seas in various countries for a year or more -- they'd fall in love with the local women and take home 'war brides'. A very different world 'back then'.

When you're in a different country -- abide by Their law. Behave yourselves.

Romans 13 answers the question of marriage. If the legal authority says you aren't married unless you have a license that says so, you aren't married.

*caveat: Romans 13 is not a license to the state to pervert the word of God, as in same-sex marriages (which are not marriages).

@JerryfromMass -- yes, it is grounds For. But it's Still better to work through the cause of the sexual immorality in the 1st place. Open honest conversation between the husband and wife. The marriage can actually become Stronger as a result

And just because one or the other has grounds For -- doesn't mean it's a good idea.

And it Does matter the Why's Of the contemplated split-up.

People seem to think that 'marriage' is Easy. It CAN be the most full-filling relationship there is.

It's like planting a garden -- it takes a lot of work to get it going -- planning a wedding -- but the garden needs weeding -- watering -- and then sitting back and enjoying. Enjoying the fruits Of your labor. Picking the good fruit / enjoying the flowers -- and the fruits of marriage -- the children. Again lots of work / Enjoyment. Seeing your own personalities in those children -- the guidance needed for their good development.

People who don't 'tend' to their gardens end up with junky looking gardens.

People who don't 'tend' to their kids -- produce undisciplined 'brats'. No one really wants to be around them or you.

Godliness Needs to be part of a relationship -- especially marriage.

But in fact in over 40% of "properly celebrated" weddings, all the "Inspired retoric" meant NOTHING. the only thing that had any "teeth" was the pastor's / Judge's/ Jp's signature on the legal contract establishing a "legal state of marriage".

The "mindset" people have is the key. When we married, it was "Till death do us part", and the "Legal actualities" which were there anyway, were the farthest thing from our minds. 57 years later they sill are. My Son was less fortunate - HE married forever, but she didn't, and the guidelines in the marriage contract handled the distribution of property kids (he got custody). The "vows" in the final analysis were nothing but hot air.

Many of them are, and also in multiple adultries - and don't even know it. That's why a SAVIOR is needed to cleanse from SIN.

I remember the guard houses on the blocks that were there to "guard the streets" and prevent "Street Kids" from bothering the residents. Didn't have anything to do with "Hookers", Just women they'd meet socially and hook up with.

Of course not. But it didn't matter what anybody "Wanted". All that mattered was WHO TO BRIBE in order to get around the law. One of our folks was the "Expert" in knowing who, and how much it would take.

That's good advice, but in a place as utterly corrupt as 1980's Sao Paulo, it's not necessarily enough. AN interesting aspect was that the POLICE advised us that if we were driving at night, to IGNORE the traffic lights, and KEEP MOVING at all costs, so that we wouldn't be found dead the next morning. When I drove, I was advised that if I hit anybody (I didn't), to make sure and back over them to finish the job. I was never so glad to GET OUT of a place in my life. The walls around the company were topped with broken glass, and the company guards carried machine guns. The Nazi presence was rather pervasive in Sao Paulo, and the hotel (El Presedente) we stayed in was run by a rather imposing German stereotypical Nazi SS trooper known as "The Colonel" complete with monical, and cigarette holder. absolutely someone out of a WW2 "B" movie.
