Exactly. "Thou shalt not kill." One can comfortably extend this reasoning to conclude that we should support measures which discourage killing.
The measures already exists which state that it is illegal to assault another man. The problem with "hate" crimes is that 1) hate is subjective; each individual has a different definition and while one person can do something in love another can come up a say it is "hateful". There is no firm foundation from which to reason from. 2) it elevates particular people groups and infers that they are more important. If a white male is assaulted then it is just a homicide, But if a gay person is assaulted it then gets elevated to a hate crime. Why??? Are they more special that the average citizen. Why do they get preferred status? This only works to create a greater divide.
Laws are supposed to be written with out difference to race, creed, or color because all have been created equal by God. Contrary to popular assertion these days, homosexuality is not a race, religion, or color of skin. It is a choice of will. I violates nature, meaning it goes against how God naturally design men and women to relate and be representative of His divine nature to their children.
God and the Bible is specific about how we should live and the resulting consequences/rewards of our choices.
Romans 1:21-32 - For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
1 Cor. 6:9-10 - Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
But before you think I'm speaking to harshly against these men and women making bad choices. I would also have us read 1 Cor. 8:9-13
I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."
We are supposed to be the light and salt of the world. We need to clean our house, the church, and make sure we are being good ambassadors for Christ. We should be standing up for truth and pointing people to Jesus the Messiah.
(sorry to be so forward, these are my thoughts)
