You say your a christian and don't go to church ??

I do wonder....At what point in time did Christians start to gather in huge cathedrals, in huge crystal palaces and huge fancy buildings and call it the only way to attend church. At what point in time was the church converted to mean a fancy building? At what point did the church decide that if you didn't gather into massive herds you were not gathering yourselves together? At what point did the church decide that its Gods will to be sheeple? God always had His individuals, His 'lone' players. God has always had a single man to speak to the leaders of different groups. Where in the bible does it say we are supposed to gather in large crowds. Where in the bible does it say that six people gathered together is not 'gathering yourselves together? Or four people, or even two people? Show me in the bible. All spiritual snobbery aside....Let's have it true according to the WORD

@Bendito -

I did some research on your question, but I didn't get very far with it. I was having trouble finding an answer to your specific questions, but I know that I read about this before. I think it goes back to the Roman Catholic church, but I can't be certain about that. When I do find something on this, I will try to remember to let you know. You have some good and valid questions here, I believe.

if you read the history books what happened in Europe was a man called Constantine who was the Roman emporer in about 400 AD 'converted' for political reasons, and thus churches that had been gathering in homes like believers had always done now had the option to worship freely and lots of temples of the romans got converted to gathering places for christians. And they were fancy as buildings.

Because christianity became the official 'religion' of the roman empire, with plenty of govt funds and thus the RCC church was born. That's why there's lots of statues (really, idols) in the RCC. They were former idols and just christianised. But the thing is I don't think the politicians and govt read the Bible properly, they just sanctioned christianity as a new religion, when its was never really about religion in the first place. That is why you get these huge cathedrals etc and places of worship.

Christians actually don't need to have cathedrals or worship in them, if they are bringing glory to God then fine, but they ARE expensive to maintain. If you prepared to maintain them then fine. but there is a case where Jesus says count the cost before you go and build.

We all know people who have mortgages in over their head now they don't realise the ongoing costs of owning a building/property. Its not really christian to hand this debt down to your children and expect them to pay for it, when they may not have wanted a fancy building in the first place.

I myself would rather that christians went out and worshipped in the open air and in the garden, or up a mountain top (Jesus had his sermon on the mount!) but having a building to go to every week thats just always there is not a bad thing. It doesn't have to be fancy..but it can be a place that's dedicated to the Lord. In the old days people were buried in the church yard - really thats a concrete example of how believers want to be together in the resurrection.

I thought I would share how the Amish go to Church.

A most interesting tidbit from what I have read here in this article and in other places is that they consider the Church Service "An Act of Worship"!

May you enjoy this informational article. Oh, no I'm not Amish, though some would consider the surrounding area where I live to be part of Amish Country. :-)

The Amish Church Service

Amish church services are held every other Sunday. The geographic area where the Amish live is divided into church districts for this purpose. Since church services are held in homes, not in a church building, each family normally hosts church about once a year.

As people arrive, someone may be in charge of taking the horses to the barn. People tend to congregate by age and gender, young boys often in the barn, women in the house, etc. When church begins, women are usually seated in one area, and men in another. Seating is on backless benches, which each district owns and transports from house to house in a bench wagon. There are more comfortable chairs for some of the older members and the ministers.

Worship begins at about 8:00 a.m. and usually lasts over three hours. Hymns are sung from the AUSBUND, a special hymnal used by the Amish. (We will devote our second article in this series to the music at church services.) There are usually three to seven preachers and bishops at a service. These men retire to a room during the singing to decide who will be preaching the two sermons that day.

Around 8:30 a.m., the first sermon begins. Since people may be seated in different rooms, the ministers may move about somewhat as they preach. Some ministers present their message in a sort of chanting, sing-song manner, in the Pennsylvania German dialect, with Scriptures in High German. It is not unusual for much emotion to be shown, and tears are not uncommon. The pitch and tone of the voice vary for emphasis. As in any church, different preachers have different styles. This first sermon may last about thirty minutes.

Scriptures are read and they kneel for silent prayer prior to the main sermon. This sermon is longer, sometimes over an hour. Ministers often quote a passage from Scripture and then talk about it. Sermons are not written in advance. It is quite amazing that these "untrained" clergy can deliver such powerful, emotional messages to their congregations. Leading a right life in the eyes of the Lord, resurrection, and the idea of "judge not that ye be not judged" are some common themes. Some also like to preach from the Old Testament.

After the main sermon, the other ministers usually make short statements that add to or emphasize what has been heard. There is about another half hour of prayer and singing. The Amish have a booklet outlining the hymns and Scriptures to be used at each service. Readings from the New Testament chapters of Matthew predominate, with Luke and John rounding out the year.

During the service, a wide range of responses are noted, as at a church service anywhere. Some people may be dozing off, others shaking their heads in agreement. Children behave remarkably well. Mothers often bring Cheerios, candy, a toy animal wrapped in a hanky, or a picture book. Sometimes a child walks from his mother in one room to his father in the other. Noisy children are usually disciplined. After the service concludes, the rooms are cleared of people and some of the benches are now converted into tables so that a light lunch can be served.

Because there may be over 150 people, men and women eat in shifts, oldest through youngest, usually in separate rooms,. Each place setting usually has a knife, cup, and saucer, with a glass of water. The meal may consist of coffee, bread, "church spread" (a combination of peanut butter and marshmallow), jam, apple butter, red beets, pickles, cheese, and sometimes snitz (dried apple) pie. A silent prayer is given before and after eating.

Afterwards, there is time for socializing among the adults. Children might play outside or in the barn. People stay into the afternoon, but dairy farmers must soon return home to milk the cows.

The Amish church service is an act of worship, a preservation of tradition, a renewal of faith, and an affirmation of community.

Additional Note on the Amish Church Service not to be confused with the Mennonites Church Service who will use Church Buildings:

Not all the Church Services are held inside the home. Because the gatherings can be rather large. They actually will hold them outside. Since most live on farms, this type of gathering is more common in the larger communities. Of cause the weather also has something to do with dictating the Church Service. Though rain or snow doesn't stop them from gathering!

hmm that's interesting. If you live in a rural area that might be a good way to 'do church' or 'be church' but if you live in a suburban or urban area it's different again.

Certainly the way church gathers now has changed from what it was decades ago, because of cars/suburbia/land prices etc. For example, I live in the suburbs. The only way I would know of where christians gather is to go to a place where it actually says it's a church, with a sign out the front saying service times or to ask someone well where do I go to be with other believers and not just hang out with them but to worship and focus on the Lord together.

The first worship gathering of believers the Lord led me to was a home group or what they called a life group and many of the believers went to the big mega church on a sunday. But God didn't want me to go to that church as my 'home church' He got me going to a baptist church for communion and a small ladies group that met each Monday (at the church).

This church was planted more than 60 years ago and some of the original members were still attending. I did try several others but think of this one as a sort of home church and I need the elders and their wisdom rather than to be stuck with everyone my age and not really learn anything.

I think the thing about buildings is that having it always there and visible and open during the week for anyone to come into and have a quiet place to pray is really important. It's not just one person's home..its for everyone that believes and God things happen there. Weddings, funerals, other meetings. To hear the word of God being preached so everyone can hear, to have a place that's just dedicated to the Lord, and to know you feel welcome and refreshed when you enter that place and know there's going to be other believers around and you can worship freely without being interrupted!!

I don't think it's a bad thing, it's a good thing, but it's not the only thing. I know christians that rent a meeting room each week and they have to pick up and pack up everytime they go there, and sometimes the rent is very expensive and so they have to cover the cost! Whereas if you have a church land or property and built it and paid it off, its entrusted to everyone in perpetuity and nobody can take that away from you. That's why there's things as covenant lands. They can't bust a church site and build a casino there for example.

People that say they believers but then don't ever bother to fellowship with others outside their home in a worship service or have the Lord's supper with others well, I think they are on shaky ground.

I know a few people like that and they will just totally shut down on the topic. It's like WHY what is wrong with us? Don't you like coming along to church we don't bite. You invite them, even offer them rides but they just don't want to. I would say something is wrong but it's their choice and they are really missing out on the blessing.

You know I stayed home for what, 15 years and didn't want to go to church and thought well I made a faith commitment by saying I believed and wanted to be a christian and that would be the end of it I will try and be a christian on my own. Just be a good person and all. Put the bible away, don't bother to read it, and just try and live my life. Didn't bother praying unless there was a crisis. I moved back home after uni and had ZERO christian friends and anyone speaking in my life on a regular basis. huh! That didn't work out for me!

Mum would go oh don't go to church. they just after your money. rah rah rah. Be your own God. Believe in yourself.

But I have to say later when I was born again I couldn't wait to go to church. I NEEDED to be with other believers it was like I couldn't rest till I found that place where I was going to be prayed for and comforted and make true friends.

I know what you mean little sister.
I long for the day to be surrounded only by believers.
So, I hold on to the hope that one day we'll be surrounded by "all" believers.
Who won't be shy about praising or worshiping Him!
For He is our Praise!
Alleluia! Can I get an "Amen"? :-)

Was thinking on this hot topic more as was reading John Bunyans 'the holy war' and in his time the church of england was cracking down on 'non conformists' i.e anyone that dared meet outside established anglican church.

John Bunyan identified with the Puritans and calvinism (apparently) and they got so persecuted the Puritans ended up going to america and making the state of ' New England' while John Bunyan was jailed for preaching and not being an officially ordained minister..and he wrote the Pilgrims Progress.

Did he go to church? Well he just didnt go to one type of church that the govt wanted everyone to go to! Did he have a home church? No he was put in jail!

I think as long as you go meet with other believers its fine because all of us dont go to one type of church over another..so I think all of us are non conformists to something! And if you dont have anywhere to go just do church where you are and it could be in jail where you actually learn from God the most. But I think if you NOT in jail dont give up meeting other believers. Yea John Bunyan dared and the Methodists dared to reach out to those who were not 'high church' which I think is a strange name to call church. I mean what is 'high church' and 'low church' is this just another version of snobbery cos sometimes I think there are churches that are just too expensive to go to!

I also heard in england that has these 900 year old church buildings that they ARE a drain to maintain well, I dont know what people plan on doing with them what I would do is just make them into gardens and open them to the public you have these beautiful stone buildings that make great ruins just grow plants in them.
