@NYQueens977 -- I read every word of your post -- I simply don't agree with some of it.
I've been in Bible all my life and married into a family that was half RCC. Am very familiar with their concept of purgatory -- and it is Not taught in Scripture. There Is one vs in the RCC Bible that does refer to that concept. But it does not agree with the rest Of Scripture.
And yes, many people Do down-play the existence Of or severety Of hell. And, yes, the various titles Of -- Hades -- Sheol --- there Is the existance of Abraham's bossom. The event in the book of Luke? the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man is able to see, feel and talk with Abraham. that which he is experiencing in Hell. on the other side -- there is a great gulf separating 'hell' from Paradise. Upon the death of Jesus Christ on the cross -- He went to 'hell' in our place and rose again bodily on the 3rd day. But, while in 'hell' -- He preached once more to those in that part -- a second chance because they now had an opportunity To accept Jesus Christ. -- and Jesus Christ Also took those in Paradise back up with Him.
Those who didn't accept Christ -- at His Word -- are still in 'hell' and are waiting for the Final judgment when they will be caste into the Lake of fire and brimstone.
I'm using " around the word "hell" because there are those who would call it Sheol or Hades -- all three are referring to the same place. -- That place is Not a place of having a person's sins purged until they are okay to be in heaven. The RCC church teaches that the loved ones of the dead person can pay for the sins of the dead person until they are okay To enter heaven. Or they can Pray a person out of purgatory.
The After-life actually begins a long time from now. Eventually there Will be the Great White throne judgement.
People would Rather try to find 'loop-holes' in Scripture than acknowledge that Now is the time for salvation. The 'holding tank' for non-believers exists Now. It's Not pleasant -- Luke 16 :22-31. If the rich man had a way to get out of there, we'd have been told then and there. Abraham Could have told him to not worry -- he still had 5 brothers who supposedly could have paid / prayed him out of Sheol / Hades / hell. But the rich man begged Abraham to send someone to warn his brothers of where their actions would send them. At That time in history -- people had the prophets to warn them. And now We have God's complete Word to warn us. The Big question is -- are We willing to believe God's Word or are we trying to find loop-holes.
Your one comment -- that hell is simply existing without the presence of God. Do you comprehend what That would Be like? God gives us Light. With no God -- we have Total darkness. And a lake of fire and brimstone -- it never goes out. And the person in it never dies. And it's Only Meant for the beast, false prophet and satan. Heaven is available for every one else. 'we' simply need to acknowledge our Need For being saved from hell. God's Word Also tells us that we are all sinners and that the wages of sin is death, But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord. Jesus Christ -- the Son of God. And that none of the good things we do while in this world, will help get us to heaven.
It's our placing our faith in the sufficiency of the blood of Christ on the cross. The blood that He willingly shed For us. He died on that cross, was buried and rose again the 3rd day -- in our place -- For us. Are we going to believe that in our hearts and thank Him for His gift To us. Or not.
