The overriding significance is, "Are we evaluating our position in God by Christ, or by something that is an admixture of Christ and man?

Our position in Christ is dictated by our life style and the decisions we make.
Matt 7:23; "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'
1 Cor 6:9; Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,

If you are evaluating your position in God by how you live you in Christ, you better make sure you are living in Christ.
Matt 7:19; "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

You are correct, in your verse above, there is no law against the fruit of the Spirit.
But there are many laws against the deeds of the flesh.

Gal 5:19; Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
Gal 5:20; idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
Gal 5:21; envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 5:22; But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gal 5:23; gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Saying he abides in us is fine. But he doesn't want us to just say it.
1 Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
John 15:10; "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

We can choose the choice we wish to follow.
Deut 30:19; "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,

Josh 24:15; "If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Rom 6:13; and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
We can choose righteousness, or we can choose sin. If you don't think any of this affects your standing in Christ, that's up to you.

Just wanted to point out that Antinomianism, in its primary definition means lawlessness, which is the status of the Christian who walks in the Spirit, "against such there is no law"
I am reminded as I read the above excerpt from your post of the text from
Isaiah 4:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.
A little later he says;
Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Your defenition of antinonianism is quite correct, that in a sense it is lawlessness. However, to then claim it as a positive attribute to Christians borders on the nonsensical, calling evil good and good evil. John tells us quite unequivocally that sin is lawlessness.
To say that the scripture "against such there is no law" is tantamount to lawlessness is wrong. The law doesn't cease to exist for the Christian, in fact, the Law of God as revealed in the Ten Commandments doesn't cease at all, it merely loses its claim on the Christians' life. It ceases to condemn. Like so many in modern Christianity you have completely lost the intent that God purposes for those who accept Christ. It is not merely that we should live forever. Eternal life isn't the sole purpose of God's work in the earth. Paul says that God's perfect will is our sanctification. Jesus came, according to the angel, to free man from sin. Not just the effects of sin, not just the consequences of sin, but from sin itself! God's purpose doesn't start when we die. It begins in this life, right now! To free us from the vile unholy evil lives that we lived as unbelievers!

Granting eternal life to believers does not solve the problem that our world is reeling under. This problem is a curse on God's creation, a blight upon the entire universe, and it was and is God's purpose to solve that problem, the problem being sin, or as many would say, lawlessness. Death of sinners isn't the problem. Eternal life doesn't solve the problem. Death of sinners is merely the result. It is God's purpose and will that we, through His grace and power, overcome sin in this life. And God has made all the provision neccesary for this to be accomplished through sanctification of the Spirit through God's word, His truth. (See John 17:17), that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Let me add to that brakelite, that the true meaning of forgiveness is to seperate us from sin that we no longer particpate in it. Jesus said that He would seperate us from sin as far as the east is from the west, this all comes to through faith which is the power line to the gift of righteousness.

Byethe way it is only through the law that sin can be measured by what other means can we understand what it is.

Hi Barney. There are other scriptures which tell us that Sanctification is an ongoing process as well as something which was effected through Christ. It was Calvary that made it possible, and it is Christ's ongoing intercession and mediatorial role as our High Priest in heaven that makes it effective. Jesus prayed that the Father would sanctify us through His word. His truth. (John 17:17.) Jesus later said to Hid disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit after He had risen from the dead and the Holy Spirit would lead them into all truth. Thus sacntification of the Spirit through God's word, His truth, is a process. Peter tells us that we are sanctified by the Spirit, and through the sprinkling of the blood of Christ. Now what can that mean?
In the OT Israel were shown the gospel as well as us. For them however, rather than through once for all sacrifice on the cross, they were given the services and rituals of the sanctuary. This was a year long process beginning with the Passover, and culminating in the Feast of Tabernacles. The service itself began with the sacrifice of the victim , be it dove, lamb, pigeon, heifer, goat, whatever, and ended with the priest ministering the blood within the tabernacle, sprinkling the blood before the altar of incense and the veil. On the Day of Atonement he went into the Most Holy Place to minister within there, just once a year. This was all a type of the gospel. Not just a one off singular event which began and ended with the sacrifice, but involved a process of ministerial action on the part of the priests within the tabernacle.
This was a copy of the true tabernacle which was created by God in the heavens in which Jesus now ministers as our High Priest. If you read carefully through Hebrews looking at the full message there, (not just a few verses here and there to suit your argument) you will discover that the OT services and the priesthood was atype, a forerunner, of the message of the gospel fulfilled through Christ. This ministry that Jesus is performing is an essential part of the gospel. It is the work of sanctification. The cross justified us, the intercession of Christ sanctifies us. This is what Peter was reffering to when he said...Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprink;ling of the blood of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:2.

Paul also suggests that sanctification is not a one off event in the past, but is something which is performed daily with ourselves as forsake sin and seek Christ's righteousness. See 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 and also Romans 12:1,2. Note Barny that the will of God is our sanctification, and we find this only through forsaking sin , seeking holiness, and submission to the Holy Spirit of God. .

Hi brakelite,

Thank you for your post and it's scripture references.
However we differ in understanding of the scriptures you quote.

1Pet 1:2 refers to our position of being (past tense) sanctified (Heb 10:10,)"through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." And this happened when we first believed in Jesus. It was our obedience to the gospel of grace that resulted in our sanctification. There is no "process" of sanctification after that.

Likewise 1Thess 4:1-8.
Note 1Thess 4:3
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

Here we see again that sanctification is received when we believe in Jesus. Note the similarity of God's will in 1Thess 4:3; and John 6:40.
John 6:40
this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life:

And the fornication that 1Thess 4:3; says to abstain from is spiritual fornication with Hagar/the law, Gal 4:24. That is we should not turn to the law to determine righteousness.

Regarding Rom 12:1-2; note what it says:
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Again, this speaks of believing in Jesus.
"present your bodies a living sacrifice,"
And "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,"

Christians have done this.
Rom 6:6; "our old man is crucified with him"
Gal 2:20; "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God,"
2Cor 5:16-17
henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Heb 10:10; clearly says:
By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
We should not doubt God when He says this. To suggest it's a "process" is to suggest that Christ's sacrifice did not complete the job of sanctification and that further work is needed to complete what His sacrifice failed to do.

Now with regards to the last part of the above quoted post of yours. I find it curious that you would quote Romans 8 with regards to walking in the flesh as opposed to walking in the Spirit when we are discussing antinonianism. Paul says, and says very clearly that there really cannot be any misunderstanding or ambiguity, that those who walk in the Spirit are in effect fulfilling the righteousness of law. Romans 6:3,4. For what the law could not do in that it was wek through the flesh, (in other words those who are in the flesh cannot obey the law) God, sending His Son in the lkeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin the flesh that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. And a little later he confirms this by saying, Because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.!!!!
Now Barny, you are saying that the law of God cannot be obeyed, worse even, that the laws of God no longer are in effect!!! My friend, that is the teaching of a carnal mind. I put it to you, that not only is the law of God still a binding law upon man, but it is indeed possible to obey it, if we are constantly walking in the Spirit. And there is the rub. Abiding in Christ, walking in the Spirit, is and must be our main priority. Not commandment keeping, not obedience, for if we focus upon these things we willl soon find that in our own strngth we will fail, but if we focus our whole mind, soul, and body and strength upon He who has promised to sanctiofy us through His word, His truth, then who are we to claim it is impossible to obey? Then, and only then, can we claim that we are without sin; then, and only then, can we claim we cannot sin.

What you propose here is that we are not sanctified, nor cleansed until you see physical evidence for it.
Yet the thief on the cross who called Jesus "Lord" was saved without any physical evidence of being perfect in the physical.
And as only past sin was dealt with at the cross (Rom 3:25;), what of the subsequent sin that you claim Christians are guilty of after receiving Christ? Why call unclean what God has cleansed in Christ?

Rom 8:33;
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
If Satan, the accuser, can no longer charge Christians with sin, then why does the doctrine you follow continue to charge Christians with sin?

A Christian's faith is counted for righteousness, Rom 4:5.
Why then doubt God when He says that righteousness is imputed to us, by faith?

"Christ is the END of the law for righteousness", Rom 10:4
If we doubt our righteousness in Christ by faith by instead seeking physical evidence through turning to the law to determine righteousness by works, as the doctrine you follow suggests, then this is spiritual fornication with Hagar/the law, Gal 4:24. And as we saw in 1Thess 4:3; God's will includes abstaining from this fornictaion.

Our position in Christ is dictated by our life style and the decisions we make.

Our lifestyle is an effect, not a cause of us being in Christ. It's our being in Him which dictates or determines our lifestyle. Our part is receiving Him, then the controlling factor is His Spirit, who continually addresses how we live (Gal 5:17).

So we've moved from being unable to sin, to when we sin, it's God's fault?

Be very careful what you accuse God of doing.
Mark 3:28; "Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
Mark 3:29; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"--
Mark 3:30; because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."

God doesn't make us sin. We choose to sin on our own.
Jas 1:13; Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
Jas 1:14; But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Hi Brakelite - The Gentile Christian has never been, nor ever will be under law, because of the indwelling Spirit. It would be as putting the Spirit under law. Believers still sin but it's not law which addresses it in and by us, that's the Spirit's work through the Cross. Law could not address sin in any way accept in identification of guilt even if it could be kept.

As the law identified man in sin, our co-crucifixion with Christ identifies the believer in holiness; it's because we still have the sin nature and still sin that we require this identification with Christ. There's nothing the natural man can do to be acceptable to God other than faith in His Son and there's nothing the regenerate man can do to be acceptable either; this is why acceptance is only in the Beloved--Christ (Eph 1:6).

The natural man has law, which doesn't make him good by obedience, because his sinful nature is still unrestrained and, even after obedience, is still guilty of the sin. The spiritual man has the Spirit who, along with the new nature, overrules the sinful nature (Gal 5:17) and is always guiltless of the sin; not because of obedience (other than the obedience of faith in Christ) but because of Christ's atonement. This is the purpose of salvation, which if it doesn't mean eternal security now and later, it's meaningless.

That's why we need to continue to ask for forgiveness. Because we can be defiled as believers.
Heb 12:15; Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
Rom 8:13; for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Gal 6:8; For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
2 Cor 7:1; Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

In order to understand justification and sanctification,
it helps to understand the word "reconciliation". If you
understand the usage of "reconciliation" and what it entails
then you should truly understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We have been given the ministry of reconciliation!

2 Corinthians 5
16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh;
even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know
Him in this way no longer.
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things
passed away; behold, new things have come.
18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

Reconciliation basically means friendship, God has initiated
a New Covenant of friendship with humanity through His Son.
This means you are no longer enemies of God, this is what
justified means. Your relationship is rock solid with God now,
the barrier has been removed. His wrath has been withdrawn.

The next verse states the simple truth that "salvation" which
being justified and sanctified is all about. Has already been
granted;

Romans 5
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through
the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall
be saved by His life.
11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Here is the critical explanation of this "reconciliation" and what
this process produces. Please read the following verses carefully
because in these we discover the true power of the atonement.

Colossians 1
21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,
22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present
you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach
23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved
away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all
creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.

If you continue in the faith! The Gospel.

Firmly established and stead fast in the faith!

Not moved from the hope of the Gospel!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a free gift to us and it
is in understanding the reconciliation that all debate
should cease. From the first moment you believed to
the very last moment you believed you are reconciled.

Now the following verse reads as it should read;

1 Corinthians 6:11
And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified,
but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

You have been reconciled to God.

The light shone in the darkness and the darkness has had theological
issues ever since. Mainly due to a lack of the Holy Spirit!

That's why we need to continue to ask for forgiveness. Because we can be defiled as believers.
Heb 12:15; Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Hi B-A-C,

All those scriptures you quoted are not referring to physical behavior, as you suppose.
Instead they refer to rebellion against God through unbelief in Jesus.

Christians have been forgiven their sin and now in Christ we have ceased from sin (1Pet 4:1), cannot sin (1John 3:9).

You claim that Christians can be defiled by physical wrongdoing. This is incorrect and not supported in scripture.
So how can a believer defile themselves and what are the consequences of defilement?
1Cor 3:16-17
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

1Cor 6:18-20
he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

We see this same warning in 1Thess 4:3
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
We are warned to abstain from spiritual fornication with Hagar/the law, Gal 4:24.
And as we see above, this spiritual fornication with Hagar/the law defiles the temple of God/Holy Spirit. And the result of defiling God's temple is you will be destroyed by God.

Living according to the flesh/following it's lusts, refers to spritiual fornication with Hagar/the law. But if we put to death the deeds of the body, that is it's desire to establish it's own righteousness by works of the law, then we will live.
To sow to the flesh is to seek to establish your own righteousness by works of the law.

Consider post #109 by DHC, and note how Christians are reconciled to God by believing in Jesus.
Colossians 1
21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,
22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present
you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach
23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved
away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard,

Believe in Jesus (and abstain from spiritual fornication with Hagar/the law).

as far as the east is from the west

Hi PJ - What you mentioned in passing made me want to share this with you:

"As far as the east is from the west." (Psa 106:12) I like to think this distance is not merely directional references of Earth which are limited, but of the East and West of the universe!

"So far hath He removed our transgressions from us"; which removed men and angels from God and set them at a distance from Him which, if not removed, are such burdens as must sink men down into the lowest hell. Yet, cannot be removed by anything that they can do; not by any sacrifices, services, or duties of any kind nor in any other way, nor by any other person, than the Lord Himself. -JG

This is to be understood not of a removal of the being of sin out of His people, for that is not done in this life, but rather of the removal of the guilt of sin, by a special application of pardoning grace and mercy; see 2 Samuel 12:13, but, best of all, of a removal of sins to Christ and of them by His sacrifice and satisfaction." -JG

So we've moved from being unable to sin, to when we sin, it's God's fault?

Be very careful what you accuse God of doing.
Mark 3:28; "Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;

Jas 1:14; But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

It's okay, but you've misunderstood my reply. You used the phrase, "Our position in Christ is dictated by our life style and the decisions we make." I need to know what you mean by "our position in Christ." By "position" do you mean our being (place) in Him or our maturity level in Him?

@B-A-C argumentative bunch here brother
not sure if most of them know what they are talking about
it reads like most are repeating like parrots something they've been taught or heard or is the flavor of the month and sadly speak from the head
not too sure how many speak cos they know
I tried to write something on this in another thread which for the most part was overlooked cos it seems a little debate is easier than reading and seeing and helping each other in truth which everyone seems to think we own or something

do you know that whatever everyone thinks is first usually stupidity that has been polished up (Check Ecclesiastes if you find my sword too hard folks)
and even if they were/are on the right track, the living of all the boastings and claims outside of Christ and Him crucified is usually not according to the vain warble that we come out with

rather than everyone fight and kick against each other as if they were pricks why doesn't it happen that the topic can be cooked in the truth that most don't really know but are basing their faith in the little they do know rather than the gospel of God in Jesus Christ the Lord and let Him do some real answering to each others hearts so we can all grow in grace rather than go in disgrace

keep it coming B-A-C
it's good to see the effort you put in to rightly divide the word brother
and to your repliers, keep the unity of the bond of peace and slow down all your answers and let the truth be revealed in each and every one of us in the measure according to God's will, not our own

don't miss the point
don't miss the mark

In order for a doctrine to be valid it must meet certain conditions.

It can not contradict other verses abut the same subject.
For example you might be able to find a verse or two that seemingly says what you "want" it to say. But if there are a dozen other verses that contradict your interpretation
then your interpretation of that verse is incorrect. The Bible does not contradict itself.
It can not be built on half-sentences, even though sometimes the Bible splits a single sentence across two verses.
If there is a seeming contradiction between the teaching between the apostles and Jesus ( I don't believe this to ever be the case ) then Jesus always trumps the apostles.
When interpreting a verse, you should always use correct rules of grammar, especially when colons, semicolons and comma's appear.

In other words if there are dozens of verses that talk about believers sin, and sanctification, and obeying his commands, but you find two or three verses that seem to
contradict this, then you are interpreting them wrongly.

and,
to add a touch to what you said B-A-C,

"In other words if there are dozens of verses that talk about believers sin, and sanctification, and obeying his commands, but you find two or three verses that seem to
contradict this, then you are interpreting them wrongly
." and that might mean that your 'doctrine' needs a colon-cleanse.

That's right B-A-C I agree with you. Let me add that through faith we establish the law.

Galatians 5
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law.
24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Live by the Spirit and not by the flesh and there are no laws to obey.

To try and obey a law will only reveal that you cannot obey the law.

Isn't that what God's law is about? The law isn't sin disobedience to the law is sin, the law is spiritual. I am so confused by christians that say that they love the Lord but want nothing to do with His law. God said thou shall not because it is not love.
Except for the sabbath the law is common sense for christians and the sabbath is about faith, why are you so offended by it? You should be far more offended by disobedience to because it is what put this world in the condition that it is in, our sins is what crucified our Lord. The motive for disobeying it is selfishness, to obey it is selflessness, does selflessness offend you? You fight it like it is the plague, why? We can only keep it by the indwelling Spirit of God because it is spiritual, disobedience to it is of the flesh the motive for sin is self, sin is transgression of the law but you know this so why does it offend you?????
